Samsung Galaxy S II review

Score 9/10

Wrap up:
For a handset with such a broad range of standout features and specs, the Galaxy S II is remarkably easy to summarize. It's the best Android smartphone yet, but more importantly, it might well be the best smartphone, period. Of course, a 4.3-inch screen size won't suit everyone, no matter how stupendously thin the device that carries it may be, and we also can't say for sure that the Galaxy S II would justify a long-term iOS user foresaking his investment into one ecosystem and making the leap to another. Nonetheless, if you're asking us what smartphone to buy today, unconstrained by such externalities, the Galaxy S II would be the clear choice. Sometimes it's just as simple as that.

btw Engadget are notorious for Apple bias, so this review is quite surprising from them

Apple frets as Samsung Galaxy S2, iPhone 5-sinking marvel, about to arrive in US

Galaxy S 2 symbolizes the iPhone 5-sinking firepower of the new generation Android smartphones. It also displays the stable strength of Samsung, which is increasingly getting vocal in its fight against Apple within and outside the court.

Galaxy S2 has sold globally a whopping three million units ever since it was launched, virtually gobbling up iPhone 4 and upstaging the rumored iPhone 5 before it ever arrived on the scene. This was by virtue of pre-empting the Apple flagship product by giving most of the speculated features of iPhone 5 months before it would arrive.

The smartphone from Samsung stable has already sent a shiver down Apple's spine, so to say. Apple has taken a note of caution from Galaxy S2's amazing performance in Europe and Asia so far. Millions of units and rave appreciations later, Galaxy S2 is yet to hit US shores. Fearing that it will steal iPhone 5's thunder Apple has moved court saying Galaxy S2's design is a blatant copying of iPhone design.

Even as the wrestling match between the Apple and Samsung, the world's second biggest handset maker, will be staged in court, two super products from both camps will slug it out for market share.

Samsung Galaxy S2 is slated to be launched in the US soon, as Function on the Verizon network this month and as Within on Sprint in September. It is rumored that AT&T will have its hands on “Attain” version of it.

Here's a quick look at the major features of Samsung Galaxy S2, which runs on Android OS version 2.3, or Gingerbread.

iPhone-beating super-thin design

The ultra-thin phone has a dimension of 125.3 x 66.1 x 8.5 mm and weighs 116 g. Its thickness is only 8.5mm (0.33-inch). It is a remarkable upgrade from the iPhone 4, the current competitor, which weighs 4.8 ounces and is 9.3mm (0.38-inch) thick.

Super AMOLED screen

The Samsung Galaxy S2 features a 4.3-inch 480 x 800 pixels Super AMOLED Plus capacitive touchscreen. This will beat iPhone 5 hands down if the Apple device will be sporting the rumored 3.7-inch screen and the purported curved glass display. It is believed that Apple will not be able to venture into providing the super AMOLED screen for iPhone 5 as it is locked in a patent war with Samsung.

Better speed

Samsung Galaxy S2 comes with dual-core 1.2GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor Mali-400MP GPU Exynos chipset, giving it greater firepoer than iPhone 5, which will be sporting the dual-core A5 processor.

Feature-laden 8MP Camera

Samsung's Galaxy S2 has 8 megapixel camera, enlivened by features like autofocus, LED flash, geo-tagging, touch focus, face and smile detection. iPhone 5 is rumored to have an 8MP camera as well, along with an improved flash unit for its camera.

Other frills and trims

Galaxy S2 has 1 GB RAM and comes with 16GB/32GB storage depending on the model. Galaxy S2 is rich in features like Gorilla Glass display and TouchWiz UI v4.0 and Gyroscope sensor.

It also sports Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, DLNA, Wi-Fi Direct, Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth version 3.0+HS and MHL USB support. It has a Li-Ion 1650 mAh battery. The smartphone boasts of additional features like stereo FM radio with RDS, optional NFC support and TV-out via MHL A/V link.

This phone is racking up rave reviews everywhere. Samsung is the second largest phone manufacturer in the world behind Nokia, but i think you can expect them to be the largest smartphone maker in the world by the end of this year with a very solid lineup.

Their display is incredible, although I'm not too keen on the hard button.
Apple is rumored to be leaving the hard button isn't it?

Android and Samsung are a killer combination, beautiful.
The camera on their T959 Vibrant is incredible and the HD video is AMAZING, can't imagine how good things will be with this upgrade.

...or sometimes the insecure ones are the quiet ones sitting in a corner, it goes both ways.

I'm far from insecure, but I appreciate your attempt at an insult. :)

I wasn't really talking about you but if your defensiveness says anything...

It's just the truth. Sure, it's got a very nice screen so long as you don't put an anti-glare cover on it and it's very light due to its high plastic content. But, it's the Apple app store that's really got me.

Have you ever used either one? Have you used both?

Of COURSE you weren't talking about me...directly, rather it was implied.
Regardless, I can understand the silence from the Apple crowd when a product as such comes out that seems to blow Apple right out of the water.
I'd feel a bit stupid if I paid a premium constantly for a product/brand and in turn believe it was the best product out there, only to have the competition crank it up a notch or two.
It's a cult and you're just a part of it.

So how you likin' this new Samsung? Pretty slick huh? :)

3G had a plastic body did it not? Composite plastics are always used to substitute for metal for weight, so long as it's a strong durable plastic.
As for anti-glare, could you not say the same about the iPhone 4?
App store has you how so and why? How many Apps does a person need, or is it more of a "want"?
What makes the Apple App store so different from the Android App store?

This is really sad!
All it shows is how easy Apple can manipulate their incurious clueless cult members for gain. It's a freakin' Store! Apple founded it as a vehicle to nickel & dime you to death skippy! Wake up and smell the coffee....FFS!

If that Apple app Store hooked you sooooooo you would LUV the several Linux Repositories where MANY MORE apps/programs are and they are available and all FREE!......

If I was going to talk about you I would say so.

Anyways, you're talking about a new phone that's only launching now. The iPhone 4 has been out for well over nine months at this point. If you don't understand the phone industry's one-upmanship by now then you never will. And, yes, I am talking directly about you now.

Of COURSE you weren't talking about me...directly, rather it was implied.
