My vent for the day.

Why the hell can't people take responsibility for their actions. All day long I hear excuses, people placing blame on one another, and back stabbing. It has come to the point where it is an epidemic. All you have to do is read a newspaper any day of the week to see the law suits, gold diggers and scammers. It is blamed on society, broken families, youth, race, the man, and every other damn thing you can think up. People believe that you have to trample on bodies to get ahead in life.

Today in a business meeting I stood in front of the President, C.O.O. and our largest client and owned up to my fuck up. I said it was my fault, I made a wrong decision, that I was sorry that I cost the company money, but I could not promise I would not make any mistakes again. I said I did my best and would resign if necessary. My co-workers were sneering and smiling to themselves, (and I know damn well proir to the meeting they were all trying to figure out how to cover their asses).

The client then said he admired my integrity and that not only would he continue doing business with us, but he would award us a new (and substantial) contract. After the client left the meeting, the President then stated, "And that is why a 1 player will be your new boss."

I am not saying this to brag, it could have very easily turned out the other way. I just wonder how some people go to bed at night knowing that they have done everything in their power to screw somebody else. Dammit people, take responsibility for your actions, good or bad, and be proud of the people you are. Above all else remember: The foot you step on today may very well be attached to the ass you have to kiss tomorrow.

Peace

I know how you feel. This was nearly 6 years ago when this ...

I was fired for someone elses mistake. I swore I did not do it, but the VP did not care and fired me on the spot thinking that was the best move for the company and the client. The guy that actually did it, just stood there and blamed me. I wanted to kill him, but I just left with my things never to look back.

The client I was working for (the client where the supposedly my mistake took place) heard of the situation and called me on my cell that evening. They had spoken to the VP and explained it was not me that made the mistake and explained the situation. They wanted me back on the account instead of sending someone new, since the job was only 7 months with 3 years left in the project, otherwise the account was going to be delayed at least 4 months for the new person to catch up.

The next day I got a call from the VP explaining he had a lapse in judgement and he wanted me to come into his office asap to discuss. When I meant him, he appologized and said I can have my job back with a small increase in salary (something like 2% increase).

I can not remember the exact words I said, but it I responded, "Well we charge the customer $XXX US an hour. Give me 85% of that an hour and I will come back to the job I didn't have 10 minutes ago."

He said that was not realistic and I should accept my position with a small increase rather then asking for such a number. I said thank you for his time, and once again you are not taking me seriously and not listening.

That day, I contacted the client directly and offered my services. Now that was in 1999, and I am still working contract for that company and have squeezed my formal employer out, and have brought in others working sub contract for me.

A simple mistake by a VP from someone not taking the responsibility turned out to be the best thing that has happened to me. My life changed that day for the better.

I say don't take responsibility, let me and I will get noticed, good or bad, I will be the one remembered, and the one that reaps the rewards.

I did the same - I said that I made a mistake, that it was my responsibility (and it was) and senior management would not accept it. They said that others were responsible for the mistake (not true). They never admitted a mistake in their careers and were not comfortable hearing anyone acknowledge one. I don't know if senior management anywhere gets to that level by accepting responsibility - they all seem to be experts in shifting blame.
