Can anyone recommend a good, free registry cleaner for Vista? Or failing that, offer advice on the problem below?

I got a virus this morning that proved to be a real nightmare. It's a Trojan that calls itself "Vista Antispy Pro 2010" or something like that, and it seems to be relatively new, as my firewall and virus definitions didn't catch it. Anyway, I've spent the last 4 hours tracking down all its associated files and getting rid of them, but I'm at a loss on how to reverse what it did to my registry.

Advanced Registry Optimizer 2010 is available through Download.com along with a couple others.

Just make sure you know what your doing when tinkering around with the registry or you can really mess up Windows.

you cant go wrong with CC Cleaner

Over 400 million downloads!!!
CCleaner is a freeware system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool. It removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. Additionally it contains a fully featured registry cleaner. But the best part is that it's fast (normally taking less than a second to run) and contains NO Spyware or Adware! :)

Are you able to run system restore to a point prior to this morning when you got the virus? that should be the first thing you try

Sounds like malware rather than a trojan. Manually removing it is a serious endeavor and you need to be careful. Malware Bytes could have done this all for you. There are a ton of free registry cleaners. I use one called RegScrub Vista/XP by Lexun. Allows you to clean the registry as well as defrag it.

Good video!

A few years ago I ran a 'Registry Cleaner' app and farked up XP.
Ended up having to reformat and start all over.
Back then I was downloading heavily and would reformat twice a year to clean all the crap out that builds up in Windows slowing it down. After a format and clean install Windows always runs fast and like new again.

There is no such thing as a good registry cleaner. I've personally seen dozens of cases where someone used one and it hosed their registry.

Your best bet is to either google removal instructions or reinstall your OS there is no middle ground for good advice here. I wish i could give better news but I can't. If it was my box (and it has been many times) I would do a complete repartitioning and full format. Hope you were smart enough to back your data up.

Used to run the registry cleaner section of CCleaner once a week to clean up the loose ends and bits left over in the registry and never had a problem with it. It worked good.

Unfortunately, this seemed to be the case, I tried the first 2 cleaners mentioned and neither helped, so I formatted my drive. Thanks anyway, everyone.

This is probably the best thing to do if you can't track down what the problem is. The problem is solved and your PC will run like new again.....
