Remembrance Day is not a memorial service to honour those who served, but to honour those who served and died.

A little known story in Canada, unless you are Greek or Italian, was the disastrous invasion of Greece by Italy on this date in 1940. Fierce resistance by the Greeks forced Nazi Germany to send in reinforcements, thus delaying their invasion of Russia by several weeks.

Oxi Day is a national public holiday and commemorated on the 28th October every year in Greece and Cyprus. Find out what's on in Athens on Oxi Day.

Didn't know this. Is there still animosity between the Greeks and Italians amongst the older generation?

Here is another tale of courage and sacrifice above and beyond the call of duty.

"Despite their failure to score any hits, the American torpedo attacks achieved three important results. First, they kept the Japanese carriers off balance and unable to prepare and launch their own counterstrike. Second, the poor control of the Japanese combat air patrol (CAP) meant they were out of position for subsequent attacks. Third, many of the Zeros ran low on ammunition and fuel.[98] The appearance of a third torpedo plane attack from the southeast by VT-3 from Yorktown at 10:00 very quickly drew the majority of the Japanese CAP to the southeast quadrant of the fleet.[99] Better discipline, and the employment of a greater number of Zeroes for the CAP might have enabled Nagumo to prevent (or at least mitigate) the damage caused by the coming American attacks.[100]"

Not sure if George Gay and Enola Gay Tibbets are related.

Another point to be made is that everyone contributes, were it not for the efforts of the Cryptographers (lead by Captain Joseph Rochefort, U.S.N.) and Naval Intelligenceon (lead by Rear Admiral Edwin Layton, U.S.N.) -- the type people some TERBites have described as "Chicken Hawks" --- none of this would have been possible, in fact it would likely have been the shattering U.S. defeat the IJN had expected.

Again wear your poppy in this the centennial year of the Armistice, and contribute generously to the Poppy fund.

Tommy Prince

I was lucky enough to know a gentleman who served with Tommy Prince all through the war. He had a great many stories about Sgt Prince. One was that Tommy often insisted on working alone which is completely against Canadian Army doctrine of the time, even in 1SSF, but Tommy said and I quote "white man makes too much noise". My friend always said Tommy should have received a Victoria Cross but the "politics" prevented it, something about the 1SSF being a joint US/Canadian unit. There were apparently a number of indigenous people in the 1SSF, way out of proportion to their numbers in the Canadian population. I wish more of their stories would be told so Canadians could hear true stories of the heroism and service of indigenous Canadians instead of the type of news we hear about them today. A great many of them just returned to their reserves after the war and lived very poorly for the rest of their lives. For some reason indigenous people could not access the benefits of other veterans.
The Wars of Tommy Prince would make a great movie but the truth would seem Hollywood enhanced. We should make the movie before the Americans do it and of course they would make Tommy and American.

Mussolini did some good for Italy, his public health initiative eradicated cholera and he took on the Mafia (put back in place by the Americans for public order's sake). He was woefully unprepared for total war when he declared war on France. It was an idiot's gambit and he paid a harsh price for it.

My father fought in the Sahara against the Australians, it's a miracle he survived at all. They were so poorly requisitioned by the Fasci that they ran out of of food. A very realistic film about the tragedy came out in 2002, worth the watch.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Tommy Price featured on the CBC's The Passionate Eye?

The Tuskegee Airmen - they fought both Nazis and racism at home. Flying P-51's they engaged in combat with the superior German ME-262 jet fighter plane. One of their many missions was to escort bombers deep into enemy territory and back.

Sikhs fought with valour during the Invasion of Burma (Myanmar), more Japanese died there than in any other WW II campaign.

In Italy the terror of the Germans were the Gurkhas. It got to a point where German infantry could not sleep at night out of fear of a Gurkha raid. They took no prisoners. They along with the Poles broke through the Monte Cassino salient.

They are the Spartans of South Asia.

THE FOXER

"The initial impact of the acoustic torpedo in the Battle of the Atlantic prior to the widespread deployment of counter-measures cannot be overstated. The U-boats now had an effective "fire and forget" weapon capable of homing-in on attacking escorts and merchant ships and doing so in close quarters of only three or four hundred yards."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acoustic_torpedo

"Foxer was the code name for a British built acoustic decoy used to confuse German acoustic homing torpedoes like the G7 torpedo during the Second World War."

I always donate and wear poppies, this year there was a young girl volunteer selling them. Some sort of cadet. I remember a few years back a bunch of Muslim in the UK decided to burn poppies to protest.
