I am confused  at the prospect of getting a very good job at a very good company with great benefits in Vancouver. I have never been to Vancouver ever. What are the things to know and think about... to consider and arrive at a reasonably good decision.

Can you refer to any online links... I have tried the obvious ones but what I want to know is hows the life there compared to GTA, hows cost of living... whats a great $$$ salary to be good. Salary benefit comparisions. (e.g. if 65 K is good for Toronto, 60 K is good for Vancouver.. if it is)

Thanks in Advance.

[You know how it feels when you're leaning back on a chair, and you lean too far back, and you almost fall over backwards, but then you catch yourself at the last second? I feel like that all the time...
That explains it then!

Don't know anything about current situation re cost of living etc but I do know Vancouver is great place to live. (IMO). I lived there for five years back in the 80's. I loved it. No snow in winter. Fantastic scenery that you never tire off. Lots of recreation, beaches, parks etc. Sking, boating, sailing, hiking trails, cruise ship port etc. Beautiful friendly women. If you live in Mississauga now and move to Vancouver you'll think you died and went to heaven.

Vancouver is full of people from east of the Praires who can't wait to tell you how great their life has been since the went there and how miserable life is back east.

Otherwise the Vancouver Aquarium is very nice.

Are you getting relocation expenses from the company?
Yes... I guess its just too difficult once you have a house and a family here. I cannot imagine selling the house here and dragging all of my family out there. Hate to think, but what if I don't like the job, the people etc... or even if things do not work out... I get laid off.. ? I'd hate to move back to TO .. this time on my own expense?

Maybe you could go out on your own for a month or two to see how it looks. Tell them you don't want to uproot your whole family, sell the house right now etc till you have a better feel for what it's going to be like. New job, new place to live etc. Agree on a set period of time when the 'probation period' is over. You check them and Vancouver out. They check you out. Maybe bring the family out for a week-end or two. When all is looking good... then move.

Just a thought.

If you are raising a family there.... You should be aware of certain issues.... Such as a higher prevalence of gang violence, and drug use amongst youth.....

Buying a home is also becoming quite expensive....

The Reason why people like myself move out East is because it's very difficult to find high paying jobs in BC (Depending on your industry).... If your new job is not long term... be very cautious because u may find it a lot harder out there to find something equivalent to your current salary....

That Being said.... Vancouver is one of the most beautiful cities in the world.... And You will certainly enjoy the laid back Westcoast Lifestyle....
