Wow, just fucking wow.
Had the misfortune to have a Reliance rental hot water heater in a property; called for service due to no hot water.
1st "technician" comes to the house, absolutely no tools with him, just a clipboard.
Relights the pilot, tells me it'll be ok with no explanation of what might have happened, and immediately goes into sales pitch mode, pushing protection plans, pushing humidifier replacement, advising on how I need a water softener, how I could use a dechlorinator, smart thermostat, my furnace is probably getting old, my AC was probably not properly charged when installed, etc etc. The clipboard is full of brochures, asks me if i want to speak to a "Home Comfort Advisor", makes a "special offer only available while I'm onsite" pitch........he spent all of 2 minutes on the appliance they already own (which I unfortunately rent from them), and at least 30 minutes pushing sales.

Fast forward a few week's, HW pilot drops again. I know it the thermocouple but its a rental so I call again.
Different "tech", exact same spiel.

A few more weeks pass, sure enough, pilot drops out, no hot water, same scenario.
Absolutely no interest in solving the problem, just pushing protection plans and unnecessary equipment replacements or installations.

Tomorrow I'm pulling the tank and returning it to their depot, after kicking the shit out of it to ensure that any good parts can't be stripped & reused.

I get it, businesses need sales for growth, but FFS if you dont provide any service why would I buy anything from you.

Topping on the cake (for me, at least), Reliance is a wholly owned subsidiary of a Chinese company CK Infrastructure.
At least Enercare is owned by Brookfield (a Canadian company)
End of rant, peace out mofo's

Didn't know they were owned by a Chinese company. Things must have changed. 10 years ago a rental water heater I have from Reliance stopped working. A technician came and didn't even try to fix it. Because it was several years old he installed a new one.

I got rid of rental and bought my own tank in 2003 when I bought my house.

Just replaced that with a heat pump water heater and DWHR pipe about 6 months ago.

Also own that.

I cannot figure why folks rent them.

Other than cheaper for new home builders to go that route.

Add up the rental charges and likely you have bought the tank several times over.

its a rental property, existing water heater was the Reliance rental & for my & tenants convenience stayed with the rental with the expectation those Reliance fuckwads would come when called to fix the problem with their equipment.
Going with Enercare rental tank, again for my tenants convenience & some piece of mind for me, assuming they try fix the problem rather than just pushing sales. Earn my trust if you want to earn my business.
Reliance dickwads, I hope your Beijing overlords deal with you as they deal with dissenters and Uyghurs.

About five years ago my hot water went and Reliance did replace it quite quickly, no BS. However at that time I worked out that I paid for it about 3x over. I been lazy but next time I am going to buy a replacement and drop the rental.
The furnace guys are way worse with that upselling.

Why wait? Replace the rental water tank. When I bought my place it had a rental. Did that for 2-3 months, then called the company and told them I'll buy the tank. I laughed when they said it would cost me about $500 and told them the tank was at least 10years old. They settled for about $40 and that tank lasted another 20 years. Saved a lot of money not renting it.

Never rent any kind of appliance. Especially hot water tanks. It's the biggest scam in the history of home ownership.

And I didn't know that Reliance was a Chinese company. Thanks for that information. Another reason not to ever deal with them.

If it flies, floats, fucks or goes fast, I rent it. Everything else I buy.
