I'm craving for Mexican... Anyone know a good/authentic Mexican restaurant? I remember eating at this restaurant in L.A called "Poquito Mas" .. wasn't a highclass restaurant, but a small chain of about 7 restaurants only .... soo damnnnnn goood. If there was one reason for me to go back to L.A, it would be to eat at this restaurant again.

Please no Taco Bells btw.

thanks

I grew up in the south western US and have been to Mexico many times. The best Mexican food I've ever had were tacos from a street vendor in Mexico City! IMO, there is no such thing as a good Mexican restaurant here in the GTA.

When I really want Mexican now I just make it at home... including my own corn tortillas.

I would have tended to agree with you until I found Milagro. The salsa easily rivals that of the stuff I devoured down south.

If anyone has tried Agave & Aguacate, let me know. The chef is supposedly some kind of food artiste. Passionate about his work. I'm dying to check it out but I hate waiting for food. It's always packed.

Well, I wouldn't mind being wrong. Three questions re: Milagro... 1. how spicy is the food (most Mexican that I've had here is rather bland), 2. how good are the tamales (although I wouldn't really expect much seeing that the only options are chicken and vegetarian) and 3. are the tortillas made fresh at the restaurant?

Yes, e coli is a proven flavour enhancer.
I won't go into any details about the experience; just to say that I ate there many times. Never had any problems at all. I was with a local though and he knew the stands to go to and the ones to avoid.

I had the carnitas panchos the first time there and it was nice heat for me. Not tongue-numbing, but a good heat.

Never had the tamales so I can't say.

Yes, the tortillas are fresh made at the restaurant.

Great... I'll give it a try. By the way, it is next to impossible to find great tamales!

I love the food at this place and the atmosphere is great too. Very authentic as far as I'm concerned since I'm only part Mexican

Milagro Cantina

Fresh tortilla chips. Yummy salsa. Tasty fish tacos. Tummy filling burritos.

Go to the Yonge and Lawrence location. Then have dessert across the street at Menchies. Lol
I'm going to check this place out real soon!

Thanks,

Don Ron :)

La Mexicana from what I recall is owned and operated by filipinos. 30 years ago it was one of the only Mexican places in town but it switched hands several times. If it's back in Mexican hands maybe it's worth a re-visit.

El Trompo is disappointing food-wise but the patio out front is a great place to people watch and for beer and basic snacks it's passable.

There's a reason ChiChi's went out of business. It sucked!

El Sol at Danforth and Coxwell is excellent but your order will take 2 hours to arrive and it will be wrong. Drink beers.

Mexican Salsas in Kensington Market (on Augusta) is an excellent basic Taqueria owned and operated by Mexicans. In a nod to gringo tastes they have burritos for $5. I had a chicken mole burrito the other day that was quite good, although I usually order tacos.

Pick up your fresh tortillas, mexican groceries and get an order of tasty tacos at the first and maybe only place to have a tortilla machine in Toronto, La Tortilleria, there are 3 locations and they cater parties too.

Dos Amigos on Bathurst St. has great queso fundido (oven-melted cheese) and a decent brunch on the weekends. I find their entrees to be run-of-the mill.

Tacos El Asador is a busy hold-in-the-wall at Bloor and Clinton that makes the best breakfast in town and everything else is pretty good there too. The catch: It's Salvadorean, so maybe doesn't count as Mexican, but they have also adjusted their menu to me kind of mexican and they have burritos too for the crowd that things Burrito Boys serves Mexican food.

I've heard Milagro is a good upscale-ish choice but I don't do Mexican to go upscale, I find street food to be the strength of that country's cuisine.

AND saving the best for last: Agave y Aguacate is a tiny food stall inside El Gordo in Kensington which serves the best Mexican food in Toronto. http://agaveyaguacate.blogspot.ca/ Everything made fresh. Minimal seating. I can pretty much guarantee you will not have better Mexican food in Toronto and my guess is you would be hard pressed to find better Mexican food anywhere in the world. Yes people, it's that good.

I disagree with your assessment of El Trompo, I find the food to be quite good.

In complete agreement with Rubmeister's recommendation of El Trompo! Authentic and fresh. Been to Milagro several times, it's hit and miss for me but it's kind of tradition now with the regular gang....fun atmosphere lol. One place I REALLY enjoy is Frida's on Eglinton west. Everything I've had was mouth watering amazing - even the Mexi burgers are great and I like the atmosphere there too. Pricier than most for some of the entrees but well worth trying out. Getting really hungry now!

Frida's is yummy but I wouldn't classify them as "authentic" but more like caucasian cuisine with a mexican twist. Kinda like adding jalapeno peppers and lime to a steak all of the sudden makes it into a Mexican steak! lol They did serve some kind of cactus which was pretty cool too.
