La Mexicana from what I recall is owned and operated by filipinos. 30 years ago it was one of the only Mexican places in town but it switched hands several times. If it's back in Mexican hands maybe it's worth a re-visit.
El Trompo is disappointing food-wise but the patio out front is a great place to people watch and for beer and basic snacks it's passable.
There's a reason ChiChi's went out of business. It sucked!
El Sol at Danforth and Coxwell is excellent but your order will take 2 hours to arrive and it will be wrong. Drink beers.
Mexican Salsas in Kensington Market (on Augusta) is an excellent basic Taqueria owned and operated by Mexicans. In a nod to gringo tastes they have burritos for $5. I had a chicken mole burrito the other day that was quite good, although I usually order tacos.
Pick up your fresh tortillas, mexican groceries and get an order of tasty tacos at the first and maybe only place to have a tortilla machine in Toronto, La Tortilleria, there are 3 locations and they cater parties too.
Dos Amigos on Bathurst St. has great queso fundido (oven-melted cheese) and a decent brunch on the weekends. I find their entrees to be run-of-the mill.
Tacos El Asador is a busy hold-in-the-wall at Bloor and Clinton that makes the best breakfast in town and everything else is pretty good there too. The catch: It's Salvadorean, so maybe doesn't count as Mexican, but they have also adjusted their menu to me kind of mexican and they have burritos too for the crowd that things Burrito Boys serves Mexican food.
I've heard Milagro is a good upscale-ish choice but I don't do Mexican to go upscale, I find street food to be the strength of that country's cuisine.
AND saving the best for last: Agave y Aguacate is a tiny food stall inside El Gordo in Kensington which serves the best Mexican food in Toronto. http://agaveyaguacate.blogspot.ca/ Everything made fresh. Minimal seating. I can pretty much guarantee you will not have better Mexican food in Toronto and my guess is you would be hard pressed to find better Mexican food anywhere in the world. Yes people, it's that good.
