Why do you think this is, are many of the Android devices sold without data plans.... seems strange that so few of them are online... one would think that would be a compelling reason to get a smartphone....

Real time mobile usage data sees iOS dominating Android

Published: 06:31 PM EST (03:31 PM PST)
Despite owning only a fraction of the mobile market share enjoyed by Android, iOS is taking a commanding lead in actual usage, with the number of unique impressions accounting at times for more than three quarters of all traffic in the past week.

According to a new near-realtime tool launched by online ad network Chitika, over 71 percent of all mobile traffic originated from an iOS device in the last 24 hours, compared to Android's 23 percent.

Since the Mobile Dominance Tracker was announced on Apr. 19, Android impressions haven't surpassed one third of the traffic monitored while iOS has reached as high as 80 percent.

The system works by compiling operating system data from unique impressions seen on the firm's ads across its network of over 200,000 websites, though the official sample size is unknown. This raw data is then translated into both a rolling 24 hour pie chart and a line chart that breaks down usage by hours. To ensure continuity, the firm employs a six hour delay before posting results.

Android is still leading the mobile market and recent numbers from Nielsen see Google's OS taking a steady 48 percent share of the market. Apple has been catching up and now holds a 43 percent stake at the expense of RIM's BlackBerry and other smaller smartphone operating systems.

I get that you can get a cheap android phone without a data plan (and thus no mobile network) but I don't understand why you'd do that... My nephew has one but he just uses it for games, texting and calls... but I would imagine he's in a small minority.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the results are compiled for all mobile devices including iPads and iPods. I'm not sure what the Android market share is for tablets and mobile non-phone devices, but I assume it's smaller than Apple, and probably proportionately so. I'm sure someone will verify or correct my assumptions at some point though.

Also, if you just want a phone, and aren't interested in data why would you buy a more expensive Apple with a ton of features you don't need? As djk points out, you can get an inexpensive Android phone and be happy. This is exactly why Android has a larger share of the phone market. My niece "had to have" the iPhone, but her parents didn't want her to have the data plan. She is now disinterested in it as it is (in her own words) "just another phone".

If you look at the graphic you will notice that iPhone, iPad and iPod are all broken out and android is shown as one segment (given the few android tablets sold this is probably not much of an issue). What is surprising to me is that the iPhone as nearly as much mobile network traffic as does all of Android with probably half the devices... and the iPad (with a small fraction of the devices) has more than either the iPhone or Android.

When I'm at Wal-Mart or another big box store, I check out the electronics section, including prepaid phones. They're almost all Android except for maybe 1-2 dumb phones with a keyboard (ex. Nokia C6 or LG Rumor 2).

That's probably a big reason why.

Led by iOS, mobile devices now account for 20% of all internet traffic in U.S., Canada

By AppleInsider Staff

Published: 07:05 PM EST (04:05 PM PST)
According to a report from advertising network Chitika, the share of internet-connected mobile devices has risen to 20 percent in the U.S. and Canada, a large portion of which are Apple products like the iPhone and iPad.

While the lion's share of internet traffic is still being generated by desktops and laptops, the mobile sector has bolstered its presence showing that an increasing number of mobile data users are browsing the web and accessing internet-connected apps, reports All Things D.

According to sites linked to Chitika's network, PCs make up nearly 80 percent of all internet traffic, followed by smartphones and tablets with 14.6 percent and 5.6 percent, respectively. Broken down by sector, Windows users comprise the bulk of web traffic with 85 percent while Mac users trail with only a 13 percent share.

On the mobile device front, however, Apple continues to dominate with its iOS mobile operating system. The iPad crushes competitors as far as internet usage metrics are concerned, with users of Apple's ubiquitous device accounting for 95 percent of all tablet traffic.

The smartphone segment also finds Apple with a commanding lead as iPhone users amount to about 72 percent of traffic compared to Android's 26 percent. Interestingly, Windows Phone now accounts for one third as much traffic as RIM's BlackBerry despite having a drastically lower market share.

Just as iOS lends itself to internet access by offering an easy-to-use browser and connected apps, Windows Phone also excels in these areas. The statistics are indicative of BlackBerry users who may still be using devices that sport relatively small screens not optimized for web content viewing.

Friday's data looks to be congruous with a separate report from Chitika in April that found 71 percent of all mobile traffic originating from iOS devices.

The trend seems to continue... odd.

Not odd at all.
PCs remain ubiquitous for doing the heavy lifting and real work, while mobile devices excel for just dicking around....:eyebrows:

And also seems to show that android and iPhone have similar looking segments.

Maybe bot and ed need their own apple vs. android elitism forum.
