Real Story Behind Keon's Fit?

Dave Keon was always one of the greatest Leafs. What is the real reason behind his "hatred" of the Leaf brand and the club? All the owners have long died and this makes no sense.

Does anyone have some inside scoop?

He was left off of Team Canada (he had a shitty 71-72 season).

Rumour has it that he was pissed at Ballard in regards to his pay.

As long as he is wealthy and/or healthy, fuck the leafs organization. They screwed him at one time and he is enjoying screwing them back (he must have enjoyed the 80's and that political bull-shit).

I for one, support his position. If I ever won a lottery and could buy the companies I haved worked for in the past, just to fuck with current ownership or management....I would in a second!

That would be sweet.

Congrats to Keon for sticking to his values.

I`ve heard that the real reason he was left off was that he and his wife never trusted Eagleson right from the start the way most of the players did at that time. Eagleson had a lot of influence over who made the team and wanted to screw the people who didn`t like him.

Part of the reason is b/c they won't retire his number - only hang it in the rafters.

I believe he was left off because he had signed with the WHA. Same reason Hull and Howe were not there.

Keon was a great player for the Leafs but now so many years after the fact he is still pissed and personally I think that's being a dick. He should learn to accept what happened and realize life goes on even if he doesn't have a grudge against the leafs.

The leafs still had the rights to Keon when he left for the WHA. When the Islanders were looking for a checking centre, they inquired about Keon. The leafs refused to let Keon back in the NHL. The Islanders then made a trade to get Butch Goring who then won 4 stanley cups. Keon eventually made it back to the NHL when the NHL swallowed up the WHA. It made Keon bitter towards the Leafs and 4 stanley cups poorer.

Thank You

The last answer made more sense than the early drival. If he was being so small minded about those reasons.

I still just do not get it. Why deny his legacy to his own kids and family? Oh well, it is his choice but must call into question too his true leadership. I know he was a factor in winning those 4 cups and thank goodness witnessed them.

However, none of these reasons have anything to do with his teammates, the fans of Toronto, and his own legacy which is being diminished by his "temper tantrum."

I do agree that there would be "honour" in actually retiring the number but there are many great "Leafs" who have left their mark on this fanchise.

It has been nice to see Sitler, Wendal Clark, and recently Doug Gilmour recently in the management. Johnny Bower has always been asscociated with the brand name for those cup wins, as was Armstrong, Horton, and least of all Bobby Baun and Mahavolich.

Let's us not forget those in the 40's and early 50's too.

Too bad he's too dumb to do a tell-all book.
How in the world could you tell how intelligent Dave Keon is?
Ever had a conversation with him?

A decade after both his and Brian Spencer's careers were over & Spencer was in deep trouble with the Law in Florida (Murder charges I believe) Keon went down to Florida to support Spencer, a former teammate who played maybe three or four years with Keon.
While Keon may or may not be intelligent (I suspect he is very intelligent) his actions with Spencer indicate he is a man of character who sticks by his friends & teammates.
In my opinion for that alone he deserves some respect. The fact he helped win four Stanley cups for Toronto (A Conn Symthe winner no less)is another reason to show him some respect.
Lord knows it has been awhile since someone brought a Cup to Toronto, why shit all over the last guy to do so

Hey JL, you've over analysed my comment. In the context of my statement, it referred to being too dumb to profit from it. Maybe I should elaborate next time - Imagine the extra moola he could make from a tell-all book ? Then again, maybe Keon doesn't need the money or extra fanfare. Now that's character!! Thanks for the character story.

Dumb comments are made everyday
