Some Brit Muslim cleric claims rape within marriage is not a crime. It is apart of the marriage.
He also claims that many wives lie about rape within a marriage.
When asked directly the question of whether he considered “non-consensual marital sex to be rape”.
he said “No. Clearly there cannot be any ‘rape’ within the marriage. Maybe ‘aggression’, maybe ‘indecent activity’.”

Of course he saw an opportunity to take a shot at our Western values and could not pass it up ...

Prosecuting rape within marriage was due to misguided Western values, he claimed. “Why it is happening in this society is because they have got this idea of so-called equality, equal rights. And they are misusing these equal rights in every single aspect of human conduct. That’s why. It is one aggression against another, and that is bigger aggression against minor one.”

You would happen to have the name of this throw back?

According to the way he sees things he is of course correct.........

Fortunatly his vison is not widely shared, and I expect when the womens groups get hold of this he might just discover that equality is in fact a given in any real society.

While his vision is not widely shared within our society, there are many societies that do share this view.

Not to excuse this...it seems wrong to us...but in our own society it is only relatively recently that we have shed these same views.

Including ours up until not long ago; feminists will tell you it's still hard to get the authorities to take such accusations seriously. We have nothing much to boast about in this regard.

Yes you are right , women got the vote in teh early part of the 20th century, and until I believe the late 60's(?) rape was impossible in the context of a marriage. However there is an opperative phrase in your post

we have shed these same views

It does take time but even human males can be brought to see the light, the problem is with teh ones that refuse to see and use religion as a cover for their control complex. This idiot needs to be dropped into a womens prison with a note tied to his neck explaining who he is and what he proposes. I imagine his attitude would change relatively quickly, or he could discuss his version of gods word with god and get the real phrasing that he and his ilk have been twisting for 400 years.

The weather seems to have brought the nasty out, ah well some sunshine an my bright hapoy side should return

This "Council" operates out of a converted candy store in a row housing complex in a working class district of London. How this character amounts to anything worth anyone's time - except as far as generating a silly, sensational headline - is open to question. Basically seems to be a two-bit ranter looking for some free PR to yank in others of the same ilk.

Not at all. The police frequently lay such charges, even where it is apparent that the woman is just manoeuvring to set up an alimony claim. Welcome to the criminal justice system in 2010.

So, if Sheikh Maulana Abu Sayeed (president of the Islamic Sharia Council in Britain) gets anally raped with a industrial-sized-plunger by his wife, the wife is scott free, right?

Women are chattel, and she is not allowed to show any sexuality except what the husband desires. A wife that did that to her husband, if the husband admitted to being inferior to a woman that is, would face some twisted punishment.

True, if they were back in the old homelands, they would get stoned, shot, hung, tortured, etc.

But, what if she raped the Sheikh in the UK or North America? What do you think could happen?

Assualt is assault here, the problems show up when you start making excuses for the action, ie., he had a rough childhood your honour, and since killing his parents he is an orphan so a reduced sentence is in order.
Laws in order to actually work need to universal if you start making exceptions you run into problems.

As far as Sharia law is concerned it is not actually part of the quoran as originally interpreted. The laws have been adjusted for better control of the chattels. The Christian faith did much the same thing over the centuries. It is a control system not a law system

Reading all of this saddens me. It looks like I didn't stand a chance since it all changed in 1983. I was considering getting married, but if one is not allowed to beat and rape his own wife, what's the point. Sometimes I think we've got it all backwards. *shrugs*
