A Muslim cleric reportedly has set his sights on turning an uninhabited Scottish island into an Islamic state.
However, the Daily Mail reports that extremist scholar Sheikh Yasser al-Habib, 45, was earlier thwarted from buying an island on the Canada-U.S. border because the price tag was too steep.
The 45-year-old radical claimed asylum in Britain more than 20 years ago after fleeing his native Kuwait. The Mail reported that al-Habib already has his own private military training camps.
He had his eyes on the unnamed North American island “located on the border between the United States and Canada.” The island sold for $8 million and a Canadian charity had the winning bid, he told his followers, the Mail reported.
Al-Habib told followers that Canada would make an ideal base because the country is “generally welcoming” with lax immigration laws. Where the island is located was not made clear.
Now, al-Habib and co. want to buy the uninhabited island of Torsa off the west coast of Scotland. The firebrand is reportedly in “advanced talks” to purchase the island.
Once purchased, Al-Habib said he would institute sharia law and build schools, hospitals and mosques.
The preacher’s current HQ is in the leafy village of Fulmer in South Buckinghamshire. From there, he preaches to his millions of followers online.
Torsa is a little less than 2-km long and has just one farmhouse and is accessible only by a private boat.
Observers are horrified at the prospect.
“They will have their own army, their own justice system, they will manage their own schools and hospitals, and people from around the world will be able to migrate to this homeland,” said Sarah Zaaimi, who has researched Al-Habib and is a deputy director for communications at U.S.
“It does challenge the notion of sovereignty. It’s puzzling to me how the U.K. authorities are allowing such a discourse. You are fundraising for the creation of a sovereign country on the margins of another country.”
Now, al-Habib is asking supporters for cash to help create his Islamic “homeland” and to prepare for the coming of their messiah, known as Mahdi. So far he has raised more than $3 million of his stated $3.5-million goal.
“If you want to live free under the banner of the imam, in a special homeland where you feel everything in it reminds you of the awaited Mahdi, everything is the Shia homeland … support this project,” he said in a video.
One of his followers scoping out Torsa said in another video: “Here, my brothers, God willing, we want to build a large mosque, a school and a hawza (Shia seminary). We want this place to be a homeland to the Shias and the believers.”
Then, the camera moves to images of the cleric’s “army” named Al-Shurta Al-Khamis performing drills at his Fulmer mosque.
The cleric has repeatedly come to the attention of U.K. authorities with officials trying to shutter his TV channel without much success.
Following the Oct. 7, 2023 terrorist attacks on Israel, the cleric was delighted.
“Who among us does not enjoy retaliation of the Zionist enemy? We were all buoyed by this news,” he said, adding that he disapproved of Hamas raping women and desecrating bodies.
Occasionally, Al-Habib has gotten into hot water with fellow Muslims.
His 2022 film called The Lady of Heaven was yanked from U.K. theatres after hundreds protested the film, accusing him and others for blasphemy for depicting the Prophet.
