The City of Ottawa would like to remind residents that Highway 417 (Queensway) will be closed in both directions from Carling Avenue to Bronson Avenue from 8 p.m. on Saturday, August 11 until 11 am. on Sunday, August 12, 2007. The Island Park Drive overpass will be removed and replaced by the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario and detour signage will be in place.
If you wish to view a close-up Web cam image of the overpass replacement, visit the Island Park Bridge site.
The Highway 417 eastbound detour will be as follows:
* Exit Highway 417 East at the Carling Avenue off-ramp, continue east on Carling Avenue, turn left on Bronson Avenue, turn right on Chamberlain Avenue and return to the 417 eastbound via the Metcalfe Avenue on-ramp.
* The on-ramps to travel east on Highway 417 at Pinecrest Road/Greenbank Road, Woodroffe Avenue, Maitland Avenue, and Carling Avenue will be closed.
The Highway 417 westbound detour will be as follows:
* Exit Highway 417 West at the Bronson Avenue off-ramp, turn left on Bronson Avenue, turn right on Carling Avenue and return to the 417 westbound via the Carling Avenue on-ramp.
* The on-ramps to travel west on Highway 417 at O'Connor Street, Lyon Street, Bronson Avenue, Rochester Street, and Parkdale Avenue will be closed.
Alternate east/west routes that you may wish to consider using include Richmond Road, Baseline Road, Hunt Club Road, and Fallowfield Road.
In advance of the Island Park Drive overpass removal and replacement, the following closures will also be in effect:
* Merivale Road between Carling Avenue and Island Park Drive will be closed from 9 a.m. on Wednesday, August 8 until noon on Sunday, August 12.
* Island Park Drive between Island Park Crescent and Byng Drive will be closed from 9 a.m. on Friday, August 10 until noon on Sunday, August 12.
Residents will be able to watch the removal and replacement of the Island Park Drive overpass using rapid replacement technology starting at 8 p.m. on August 11. The existing 400 tonne structures along the Ottawa Queensway will be removed, and replaced using self-propelled modular transporters - a first in Ontario and Canada.
If you'd like more information on the project, go to the Highway 417 (Queensway) Bridges Project site. To learn about the impact of this construction project and others throughout Ottawa, visit the online Road Work and Street Closures tool.
