BOSTON — Dunkin' Donuts has pulled an online advertisement featuring Rachael Ray after complaints that a fringed black-and-white scarf that the celebrity chef wore in the ad offers symbolic support for Muslim extremism and terrorism.

...

Critics, including conservative commentator Michelle Malkin, complained that the scarf wrapped around her looked like a kaffiyeh, the traditional Arab headdress. Critics who fueled online complaints about the ad in blogs say such scarves have come to symbolize Muslim extremism and terrorism.

The kaffiyeh, Malkin wrote in a column posted online last Friday, "has come to symbolize murderous Palestinian jihad. Popularized by Yasser Arafat and a regular adornment of Muslim terrorists appearing in beheading and hostage-taking videos, the apparel has been mainstreamed by both ignorant (and not-so-ignorant) fashion designers, celebrities, and left-wing icons."

Perhaps if I'd seen the ad I might take a different viewpoint, but it does sound like this is an overreaction.

Really, who cares?
People who are aware care. Michelle Malkin is an asian neo-con nut who also voiced support for the internment of Japaneses Americans during the Second World War. That got her dropped from many of her assignments.

This latest outburst from her is just another racist rant that serves to demonize Arabs and Palestinians in particular.

That's most likely why you don't care.

Considering that the kaffiyeh is/was a recognized symbol of Palestinian nationalism, which is a movement that has supported terror attacks as valid "resistance" there is a basis for it.

The use of a current fashion trend has no real connection to it though. Ray wore it because she (or her stylist) thinks it's trendy. It's a non-story.

I find it funny that a guy who has had posted many outbursts that could be interpreted as racist rants criticizes others who for doing the same thing.

Malkin making a stupid complaint in her ongoing egomanical quest to keep her name in the public eye isn't noteworthy in the least bit. It's all she's ever done.

The fact that Dunkin' Donuts actually gave into her is pathetic. They should be ashamed of themselves.

Does anybody remember when journalists used to report the news, instead of trying to make themselves part of the news?

I agree with you 100% sometimes it is just a scarf...............But that does leave to converse to be true also.

Personally I like her as a television personality.
