We are redueing our company website, ( we sell wedding invitations and stationery) , what information do you look for on a retail website?

I have considered the nature of this board before I posted this and I am looking for general information on what you look for on a website that you go to for products.

And no I will not provide teh numbers of teh brides to be .... or their mothers:D

Spelling for one... lol
Seriously, if I see spelling, grammar or other signs of amateur layouts I get very suspicious, especially for products that need proof reading!!

- I need to see an address. If all I see is 1-866 or online form then I go 'next'.
- Quality photos
- Specifications, features and options in your case that would be size, materials, weight, colours
- Less is more. Small fonts, light backgrounds, thumbnail pics....

How about bridesmaids?! :p
Unfortunately the brides maids that attend shows or are attending with the bride to help with the selection are really really really purpose driven, they would use your innuendo to beat down the price......

I want to know what is a link and what is not. In other words, don't make me move the cursor around to see if the little hand appears, indicating a link. Instead, keep the links underlined.

Don't put everything on the first page. Let the simple links on the front page take you to the rest of it.

Simple graphics, fast loading. If the website hangs even for an instant while loading, i'm less likely to go back to it, or wait for it.

I agree with meister. I need to see a street address somewhere, so it's legit.

Light background, easy to read. Sans serif fonts for titles, serif fonts for lengthier reading.

Easy to read. Links should be easy to find whether you do it by putting them in a different colour or underline them.

No music, but if you feel you must have music make it really obvious what I have to click on to turn it off.

Good grammar and spelling - I'm not knocking your post as I am sure you take more care on your website content than a quick post here but the quick way to get me to look elsewhere is to have it full of mistakes - especially in your case where you are selling a product that must be perfect or you're gonna get killed by a psycho-bride.

Some good photos of the types of product you offer. If applicable - prices are a bonus to see, that way I don't have to waste both our times if you are going to be more than I want to spend.

Contact info: At a minimum a phone number and address. An email addy is great - but only if you are prepared to answer me in a timely fashion.

I know spelling has already been noted for you, but ya seriously, big thing. I'm not just referring to your OP, I find alot of websites (including my company's) that no matter how many eyes look at it that seems to be the main thing that gets missed.

Not sure if you have women on your team, but from experience they seem to have a keen eye for detail & obviously first-hand knowledge for what women would go for.

Esthetics. Colours are important, it should match what you are selling and who you are selling to... but don't go overly girly just because your market (I assume) is primarily female, because that could offend potential customers.

Be concise. Don't go nuts with a ton of options. The wedding industry is outrageous, too many options on your site alone could send someone in a tailspin and in another direction. Acknowledging the stress of this could also work in your favour but tread lightly on that point. Be careful not to patronize by over empathizing the stress of this time in a woman's life... you need to find a decent balance between what women would want & what is practical.

Remember as much as woman want sensitivity, some also crave (especially when overwhelmed) being told what they need. You can accomplish this by simply being concise.

3 sisters... I was directly involved in all 3 weddings... you see alot & hear alot & you just have to shut up & take it if you want to get out alive!!! :p

The font on the website has to match the bridal theme. Picking out these types of items can be overwhelming in a good way but you want to get them in the frame of mind to shop and get their invitations and stationary picked out. Reminding them that their wedding is a special time is always good.

Soft wedding type music might also be a good idea. Remember customers buy more when feel good music is played while they're shopping. This is a proven fact and should be transferred when shopping online. Make sure there is a button available to turn it off since it might get annoying after a while.

Keep the site clean yet informative. Putting too much info and/or pictures on only a couple of pages will big bright fonts and colors will look too busy and distract the customer to the point where they leave the site. If you want to have a detailed site, do it in separate pages. Just don't info overload.

I like to know that you are local.. I like to see a physical address, because I try to buy from companies in Canada, just to avoid big shipping costs.

And certainly no spelling or grammar mistakes!

And if you ever find me ordering wedding invitations from you for my wedding, please take the time to hunt me down and shoot me.

A good "about" statement - why should they buy from you and not the myriad other paper/invitation retailers?

Show as much of the product as you can, inc. colours, styles, fonts, etc.

Big pictures, small file size
Prices
Options
Examples of past work (minus names, etc.) + testimonials

Minimize the amount of scrolling required.

Keep the design simple and logical. Maybe even two sites - one with Flash, one without.

Internet security, if you allow for/encourage purchasing online. (Let the customers KNOW that you use "X" security.)

Ensure you have contact info on every page as a header/footer.

Sorry, don't have any more time to think about it...
