I don't think we should all read the news or hear stories too literally. Maybe the guy did something else that landed him 32 months in jail, who knows? It's best not to travel specifically for hobbying but only to hobby as a bonus while traveling if you have an opportunity. The bottom line is to take all the precautions when you travel and do your homework to study up on the country that you're visiting. That said, even then you might still have a chance to get nailed as there's no certainty in life. You only have to ask yourself if the risk is worth it!

I don't say that the town is pretty, you could be seated in one of the best hotel in town and on the other side of the street, there is a refugee camp. Lot's of rubles, but the Haitian are generally Good Peoples. As for the Haitian girls, they are the most GFE, that I have ever seen. Been there a few time, and only had one bad experience. As said at night don't walk, use transportation and everything will be alright.
If you go at the same place on regular basis, you make friends, some who works and have their own car, like everybody they are always looking for extra income,and a bit of excitement, so for a reasonable amount, they will bring you to the hot disco, if needed translate for you and bring you back to your Hotel along with your date. Nothing dangerous there. Haitian are very resilient and life goes on for them, even tough they are living the worst part of their history.
There are paranoid peeps everywhere. When I was in Costa Rica the US dudes were of either extreme for the most part, either brazen load-mouths or paranoids, but in between were a bunch of normal decent and careful guys too, who knew how to behave and be successful on their mission. Actually many of the US dudes were more paranoid of the Cdn health care system and fearful of what Obama was hoping to accomplish with their own health care!

It is such a matter of perspective. Just in this thread we have a guy who is concerned about going to Japan because of crime, and on the other end of the spectrum, a guy who hobbies bareback in Haiti, because he feels the HIV risk is overstated. My conclusion is that you should decide what your own risk tolerance is, and do some research.

Gotta say when in Bangkok I always feel safer than in TO. Once while a civil/army coup was in progress the Tourist Police actually directed protesters away from the various tourist quarters of the city. I've even knocked awhile around Cambodia and with reasonable precautions I never felt I was at risk. It's like anywhere else in the world. Be polite - don't insult people - mind your business. Most people in those countries have enough of their own life to worry about without complicating it with foreigners.
That's not to say you won't get short changed by the cabby or have your camera snatched or have a girl or two do a "runner" on ya <shug> that''s life eh!
Once when in Hong Kong (kowloon side actually) I picked up a girl on the street very late in front of my hotel - I was pretty drunk. Well even though I was 3 times her size she didn't get phased in her plan. Up in the room and naked on the bed she enticed me into some serious titty licking - next thing I know it's morning and she's long gone. can you spell M_I_C_K_E_Y F_I_N_N ........LOL
She cleaned my wallet out but left me all my ID / passport & airline ticket - she'd even had the balls to go and have a bubble bath in my bathroom and knock back a mini bar drink or 2 heheheh
I laughed and chalked it up to experience and considered that the price of my travel had incresed by about $6,000HK.

This is utter bullshit, been to Thailand twice alone and the customs don't even look at you. As long as your paperwork is in order, they stamp your passport and you're on your way, no questions, nothing.
As for safety, the only time I ran into trouble was through my own stupidity, rang the bell in a Thai karoke bar and didn't have the money to pay, BIG mistake, 3 of them followed me to my hotel to get the money. But expect to be ripped of by motorbike taxis and the girls if they figure out a way to. I passed out drunk a couple times, only to find money, cell phone and lap top gone when I woke up. I was at a hotel that didn't take their ID, I moved hotels. Always make sure the hotel takes the girls ID.
In Thailand, if you keep your nose clean you can have the most fun you will ever have, but if you do stupid shit, you could easily wind up in a shitload of trouble, or dead. I saw a couple guys making fun of a few ladyboys, next thing you know one of them had about a 4" gash on his cheek, shirt covered in blood, needless to say his vacation was over.
