Question for disabled persons.

I just finished readying the thread "Willing to help?" started by tonydisabled and was supprised that all the repsonses were considerate and helpful. I guess I was afraid that people wouldn't been that considerate. Anyway, I wanted to ask a question for those who've already been through what I need to do.

I currently need a cane to be mobile and have had my car modified so that I can drive without using my feet; but I don't think a cane will be sufficent for too much longer.

I live in the North York area and I'm looking for a professional to talk to about my mobility needs. I don't know if I should be looking into a walker, a scooter, a manual wheelchair, or an electric wheelchair.

Can anyone recommend a place or someone who can perform an assessment and write a perscription of these type of mobility aids?

George I am physically challenged as well and if I were you I would contact the Ontario March of Dimes. They assist adults with disabilites. They can give u an assesment or point you to services to meet your needs. Here is the website

I should have thought of them. I'm registered with their Job Search program "Stragic Employment Solutions" so I've been to their offices. I know they also do funding, but I hadn't thought of them doing assessments.

Your welcome George. March of Dimes is good place to talk to and six's idea of the Toronto rehab is one I would reccommend too.

Bloorview Macmillan is primarily for kids unless you are learning how to drive they have drivers ed for adults there.

Thanks everyone for the responses and PMs. I just spoke with my neurologist's secretary. They've finally reviewed the muscle byopsy done last January and have scheduled a followup appointment for the end of this month. Finally I'll be able to get a prognosis on my situation.

I expressed my concerns re the leg weakness getting worse and they are going to do the wheelchair assessment at Toronto General Hospital at the same time. This will probably be best at the neurologist will be most knowledgable about my prognosis as she will be making it.
