Oh, I can get one of these cameras at a reduced price -- hence the toss up between those two models only.

BTW, here are the full specs of each:

Samsung: http://www.steves-digicams.com/2003_reviews/digimax_v4.html#specs

Kodak: http://www.steves-digicams.com/2003_reviews/dx6440.html#specs

I recommend the Sony DSC-717 (that is the one I have) or the earliest model, I think is the DSC-828 or something like that. The best you can get for the buck. My website was done with this cam, and I can say that results are to the expectations that I had. Great camera, zeiss lens, with many features. As for video, I recommend the Cannon GL2 :) Its the latest toy I got, and I really am surprized at the quality!

My take . .

Both of these look good on Steve's Digicams review board . . My personal favourite is the Canon G2, still availabke on e-Bay around $300 to $400. It does the job of the more current G5.

I like the manual controls, including manual focus.

See: www.theprofsglamourpix.com

All except one or two taken with the G2. My previous camera was a Kodak DC4800. It didn't have sufficient manual controls and no focus assist so I sold it. But it was an excellent camera for outdoors, etc.

I was never a fan of the Kodak "Easyshare" system. There are better devices toi transfer pix -- such as card readers.

It all depends what kind of pix you want to take and what you want to do with them after you do.

Good point Damondean, what you intend to do with the pics is very important. In my case I needeed a pro result so it was the best choice. But YMMV :)))

I have the Digimax model just below the v4. I think it is the 420. One thing I notice is the slow start up time. If you see something you want a fast shot of, it is almost always too late. Slow start up, slow capture and slow shot to shot time. Also eats through batteries very quickly.
I haven't heard too much about the Kodak, don't usually have great reviews.
Maybe save up some more and get one of the highly recommended cameras. Saw a Canon S 400 go for just over $400Cdn on eBay today, Olympus C 750(4mp, 10x optical zoom) for $500 with $200 rebate, other decent cameras and prices if you have the patience to wait and watch.

The Samsung digimax v4 and kodak easyshare dx6440 look like similar cameras, at a similar price, and will probably perform about the same. The easiest way to decide on which one to get is to go to the store and see which one feels the best, and which one the salesman sells you, and just buy it.

or you could read more reviews www.dpreview.com/

You will also need a memory card, rechargeable batteries, charger, and small carrying case.
