Question about buying phones...

Ive been searching sites looking for a good used cellphone. But im a little nervous about buying them, what kind of things should i be looking for, besides the given if its to good to be true. Im worried about buying one that is on a contract with someone , and they have run up the bill, then ive bought a totally useless cellphone, right. Not sure how that works.

1) Boogers and dried spittle on the phone.
2) Ear slime on the ear piece

Why the hell would you want to by a used phone?
