I keep VCRs around solely for routine taping of TV shows on basic cable. I am looking to get into PVR but they all seem to be designed (and priced) for the HD crowd, like $500 for a Rogers HD unit.

Does anyone have any recommendations about either

- PVR units
-internal computer cards (I have a 4 yr old AMD I could use)
-external solutions like ATI Wonder USB or similar

I am looking at Kijiji and see some FTA satellite PVR solutions but it is not clear if they would accept basic cable as a source.

Thanks

I use an Hauppauge PVR-150 with Linux to record shows, but the PVR-150 has been replaced with the likes of the HVR-1600 (or others).

The HVR-1600 has Linux support for standard definition tv; I don't know if the HVR-1800 or HVR-1250 do yet or not (well, at least for standard-def analog TV; I know they have some support for HD and ATSC signals).

If you don't like using the command line (and fighting with some configuration details), then look into tools such as "MythTV", or "Mythbuntu", which serve as a PVR for an internal video capture card.
