anyone know how to download programs recorded on my PVR?
my rogers box has an option to download to a VCR - but everything i've recorded is HD

my box has a USB port on the face - any chance i can download via it?

Recordings are encrypted so it won't be easy to say the least and for that you need to open up the box and take the drive out. That USB port is only for future storage expansion and likely is not enabled in your box anyways.

The only way is as you said to use the video outs and either record directly to your computer with a converter or a DVD/VHS recorder.

I don't even think removing the hard drive will work as the data is encrypted on it.

As CP stated: you will need to output it to something like the Hauppage PVR via the composite video cables.

Hauppauge is the only one that's external now but there are some other cards that can input HD signals.

Do a search at www.ncix.com , they've got a few.

(If by converter you mean something that will decode the data stored on your PVR, there's no such thing unless you have some hacker that has written a program to un-encrypt the data. They do this for a reason so you can't pirate copies of the movies in HD format).

I have a rogers PVR and I was able to use the firewire port on it to record to my Mac laptop using a really basic VCR program. It wasn't the easiest thing to get set up but it worked and I just recorded into my editing program. I'm sure there are lots of people trying similar things on the PC side - maybe AVSforum.com?

Firewire captures...

I've had success with my provider [Aurora Cable - before it was taken over by Rogers] with our Motorola 6412 PVR...
...but I've not touched it in a while. [time constraints]

Check out: http://replayguide.sourceforge.net/dct6412/

You might look into HDMI capture...

http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/intensity/

...but I suspect you'll run into the same limitation as captures via firewire. (ie. no visibility on the 5C protected channels.)

Have fun!
