Proud to be a Canadian

I am very proud to be a Canadian citizen living in this great country. We have citizens from all over the world - Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, South America etc. who all feel the same way. Many have come here to escape evils and to start and build a new life.

What makes Canada great is we can speak out and have our opinions without fear - for example, either for the war with Iraq or against it. Unlike Iraq, where Saddam Hussein and his regime will have you killed for opposing and speaking out.

My point is this, if you are ashamed to be Canadian, I feel sorry for you. You are missing the point about Canada. You can be ashamed and embarassed about the decision Jean Chretien has made, but being Canadian allows you to do this without being punished.

I have never been, nor will I ever be ashamed to be a Canadian.

I am embarrased by those that represent us to the world on a far too regular basis (like Cretien and Don Cherry), but even though I admire the U.S. for many reasons, I will always live here and be a very proud Canadian [insert Molson commercial here].

The only thing I'm ashamed of, is sitting on the fence so damn long that Kathleen retired before I met her *thumps forehead*

Jean Chretien

Whoisyodaddy, thats why being a Canadian is great, because come next election (if Chretien would still be active of course) we can choose to not re-elect him. We can vote, the process of democracy. Try to do that in Iraq, and Saddam Hussein will have you executed.

If your so ashamed of being a Canadian, have you thought of going to live somewhere else? I'm ashamed that you would even call yourself a Canadian. I hope you can find peace within yourself.

You know, I never thought of it that way before. Thanks, you've brightened my day considerably.

We are. We are just more mellow about how we express it!

And, by the way, I think that some of the Americans on this board should refresh their memories about what "patriotic" means:

Patriotic \Pa`tri*ot"ic\, a. [Cf. F. patriotique, Gr. ?
belonging to a fellow-countryman.]
Inspired by patriotism; actuated by love of one's country;
zealously and unselfishly devoted to the service of one's
country.

Notice, the word "American" is not mentioned in the definition. I think that many Americans mistake love of America with "patriotism".

The fact that many Canadians don't agree with American foreign policy does not mean that we are not Patriotic. Perhaps we have different priorities for our countries.

Zog.

P.S. Maybe I live in a dream world, but I would really love to see just one thread about this issue without some pig-headed post claiming that opposition to this fight equals support for Iraq. Why is it that some Americans are so narrow minded that the assume that anyone that does not agree with them is automatically on the other side?

I hate Saddam and what he has done to his citizens and internationally through his support for terrorism. I just don't believe that killing even more Iraqis (and risking American lives) is the best way to address this issue. -Z.

I agree with you, Canada is a great country. If it werent for the exchange rate, I would love to live and work in Toronto if the opportunity presented itself.

If you could actually elect Don Cherry as PM, I honestly believe Canada would be the next great superpower. LOL!

It is funny... seeing the American flag wave, hearing the American national anthem,at a live NFL game.. sure stirs up the patriotism in me...Or driving thru the USA around July 4... I think wow..... what happened to Canada? Why do we not have any of this?

I think if people are sincerley proud of their country... they should show it... but the pacifist canadians choose to remain quiet and live through our american neighbours when it comes to patiotism
i think canadians cringe when we look at some of the innane things americans say or do when they are being patriotic, and in response we shy away from such things because we see the flaws in such self-adulation that is blind to the rest of the world...

you know, like when some american says "where else but in america can a poor immigrant become a millionaire!"

(answer - try canada - with people like frank stronach, the reichmanns, and the guys who started companies like ATI, Mitel, Corel, etc, and then there's australia, england and many other liberal democracies).

what really bugs me is how so many canadians ARE patriotic towards the uS - you know, like all those canadians who had "god bless america" stickers on their cars - but not even a canadian flag to be seen anywhere else! or how about those stupid alliance party types who are so pro-american that they put down this country with almost every thing they say! if they love the way the uS does everything, they should move there and leave this country for those of us who want something at least a little different from the US.
