My (external) Fantom Drive turns on and I can hear it running for a bit but then it stops and then starts again but it never "works" (i.e. my laptop recognizes the external hard drive). Any help? I would bring in to a computer store but there's porn on the hard drive.

Try plugging it into different USB port. Check if it works on another computer. Might be wise to do a virus scan as well ;)

Could be the power supply or the HD is on its way....how old? Make sure its well plugged in the wall or it can also be the jack going in the HD can be loose.

when you say it "turns on", do you mean by a power switch? or when you connect it via a usb cable?

try a different cable too. worst case, remove the drive from the enclosure and connect it directly to your pc via sata or ide. most likely that'll work.

Has the drive been working when you plug it into your laptop? Does it work if you plug the drive into your desktop computer?

If you have never plugged it into your laptop and it did not work on the laptop, you laptop may not be providing enough power through the USB to run the external hard drive. In this case you need to plug the external drive into the mains (does the external drive come with an AC adaptor?)

If you external hard drive has been working when plugged into your laptop, desktop or any other computers, and you have it for a few years, it is possible your HD is screwed.
