Hi,

I'd like to buy a new printer/fax machine. Quality of print is not a great concern, however cost of replacement toner cartridge/inkjet refill is.

Which would cost less to maintain with regard to toner cartridge/inkjet refill replacement?

Lasers cost more to buy, but are a LOT cheaper to run.
Plus you have the big advantage of having no inkjet heads to dry up, which is the nightmare with color inkjets.

I have a lexmark 5150 its an all in one 4 in 1 fax, print, copy, and scanner. I love it, it cost me about 80 bucks at factory direct and at the time they had an offer to buy thier printers and get a buddy pack webcam set.

It came with ink. and the cable cord some printers don't which to me makes no sense. to not come with the ink and the usb cable cords mine came with a mac and windows CD my friend who bought the same printer did not come with the mac and windows cd again doesn't make much sense to me when its the same lexmark 5150 and it came in the orginal lexmark box so it's not an issue from where I bought it.

the ink cost about 85 dollars I usually buy the double pack of black and colour ink last about 3 months for me because I don't use my printer that much.

those ink reffiler kits are more hassle then anything else. some places have were you bring back your old caterigdes and they donate them to charity some libruary and schools have that program its better then throwing them in the garbage when they are finished.

Laser. Very very definitely laser. Better quality print, ink does not run as easily if coffee get spilt. Much less expensive over the lifetime of the product.

Laser printers might run about $100-150 for the low end (black toner), but the toner cartridges should last long enough to bring the per-page costs down to about 5c per page.

Inkjet printer cartridges (for the most part) run to about 50 or 75 c per page, although if you're lucky you can find one that takes "cheap" cartridges and make them more cost-competitive.

I bought a HP 950 All in one about 6 years ago. The last time I did a page count it was over 25,000 which is way more than I ever thought I'd get out of a 400.00 all in one. Now the fax/scan/copy feature is failing. It's the lamp thats going, otherwise it's a workhorse. Inkjet btw.

The machine owes me nothing. The cartidges are realively cheap.

But I think I'll go with a laser when it dies. The laser inks carts tend to last longer.

But I have to tell you..I've been expecting this HP to die for the past two years but it just keeps on printing perfectly. Occasionallly it make some grinding sounds and burps and farts a bit but it just keeps going with no user intervention. It was a very good purchase.

...and go to inkjet sales and buy your ink.
Half the price (if I remember right), I'm surprised none of you have suggested this.
One time, they had a special awhile back, I bought up a bag load of ink and forgot their prices.
