I've got a popups problem. It only occurs when I first log on to Explorer or occasionally when I click a link. I have McAfee and I just ran AdAware and cleaned things up. But the damn popup remains! Any suggestions?

You may have to run Ad-Aware a few times to get rid of everything. Some spyware programs have background tasks that reinstall themselves if programs like Ad-Aware remove them. You should also reboot after each scan.

Do a search for SpyBot utility. One of the best tools for removing harmful cookies, pop-ups etc. It's free.

OK, I tried that. AdAware comes up clean. My anti-virus found 3 unwanted programs in my Windows directory which it can't clean or delete (so I quarantined them). I rebooted so time will tell if it worked or not...

Did you try Spybot. You can add the Google tool bar to IE and it has a add blocker. You could instal "watch dog" and it lets you know when a program tries to install an 'unwanted' cookies. I would suggest you try both Spybot and "watch dog".

Recently I had a fatal error and had to reinstall everything (xp pro). Since then between the latest greatest IE and PC Cillin I have had no popups. IE even has a blocker now.

On a related note, I somehow get NO popups now what so ever. I enter the internet through the 'favorites' in 'My Computer'. The downside of this seems to be I cannot open anything that requires another window ( have to paste the link which doesn't always work). Anyone had this before?

You probably have disabled the option to open new windows.

Well, now everytime I reload my computer my homepage is changed to some pseudo-Microsoft piece of crap. I dunno if it's cuz I quarantined the 3 files in question or if it's b/c the adware isn't gone.

I'll try Spybot next.

Doed anyone have a link to adaware. I went to the site and tried to use it and I was told that I had to pay. When I stated no it put a bunch of crap on my computer. I am thinking I had a bad link, so if anyone can help, it would be appreciated.

Dump IE and be pop-up free

Try either Opera or Mozilla browsers. They are free and can be set up to block all pop-ups. Have been using them both for years and I rarely use IE anymore.
