Ok guys, totally not-related topic. But in your surfin of the web, you probably have run into them....pop-ups, other than running a Java based browser, what tools do you use to eliminate or block pop-ups. I've tried many tools, but there is this one or 2 persisant ones that just don't leave.

The Opera browser has had pop up blocking for years and one reason why I use it. I find it faster ( i don't think its a java based) than Netscape or IE.

The browser coming from Rogers yahoo has this too.

With Opera, if you should get in pop up hell as a result of not refusing pop ups, Close the browser and it will stop the application with out spawning any new pop ups. This is so much unlike explorer.
When you start Opera again, you will get the option of starting with your home page or no page. Do not select "from last session" (something like that) or you are back in pop up hell.

I use Yahoo Companion for IE... it's got a popup blocker that works pretty well. It also 'centralizes' your bookmarks so if you happen to go from one computer to another, your bookmarks are all ready. companion.yahoo.com

If you install XP SP2, there is a pop up blocker for IE included in the update

I have to agree with smiley27 about this update from Microsoft. I'm running Windows XP Professional at home and the update caused so many problems. My Microsoft Office would not function properly and required re-authorization for it to work. The biggest problem was that my display driver defaulted back to a generic VGA and would not allow me to reload the proper driver. Microsoft suggested I restore my system to the point before the installation of SP2.

Use the Google Toolbar.

Thanks for the info Cardinal. I was literally in the process of downloading SP2 and cancelled when I read your post. I'm also on XP Pro with Office and am networked. Am I missing out on anything otherwise if I don't install it? Sounds like it's not worth the trouble.

Like everything else Microsoft will develop a patch to fix the problems of SP2. The SP2 updates are security based updates so I do think they are important. They haven't worked the bugs out of it yet. In the meantime you can go and download the toolkit that blocks the SP2 from your Automatic Update.

Use either Opera or Mozilla Browsers

Both of these alternative browsers have built in pop-up blockers and are free to download. Have been using them both for years. I like Opera best because it's the fastest browser out. I rarely use IE anymore, only as a last resort and that is very seldom lately.

Try the free pop up utility available from www.panicware.com. It's same one that comes with the Google toolbar. This way you do not have to install the Google toolbar to get the utility
