As the U.S. gradually implodes and its society slowly disintegrates into riots, mayhem, corruption and bread lines, we in Canada may be faced with an influx of American immigrants trying to escape the conflagration.

Canadians (and Americans, of course) who want to protect themselves and their assets from the implications any collapse of American society and economy may bring may want to consider emigrating to a country like Costa Rica.

Here is a link http://www.livingcr.com/ for further information. It is probably one of the safest countries in the Western Hemisphere with fair tax laws and a solidly democratic government.

Paranoid? Seems like an extreme answer to a change in government.

We should build a wall at the border to keep them out.

If you've been to CR as much as I have over the past 5 years, you'd think twice about moving to CR. Crime is WAY up. The police are corrupt, and gringos are targets both for the criminals & for the police to hit up for bribes. If you think that the economic downturn hasn't been felt there, I can tell you that the effect it has caused has been to make criminals more desperate and willing to use violence. Also, because prostitution is legal & it's become known as a destination for sex tourists, the locals who aren't criminals will view you with suspicion.

Actually I had heard also that Costa Rica which was a few years ago a gem off the beaten path has become corrupted in the recent past. Not major crime like murder or rape but a lot of petty street crime such as pick pocketing.

The end isn't quite that nigh. With a partial recovery followed by stagnation over the next decade America could close most of the fiscal gap by rolling back the American empire, and with some modest tax increases, Edit: Single payer health care like here would save them 400 B a year alone. Of course that would leave them moderately taxed and under served... But that's the least you deserve for not being able to figure out that you can't grow your way out of a massive structural deficit, and that transferring wealth to wealthy people who can float the money internationally isn't good for domestic growth. And that's excluding the wars, gross contracting corruption, gross failure to regulate, encouraging anti-science sentiments, encouraging bubbles, fundamentalism, allowing media consolidation, having a left leaning party that is technically centre right, having two parties that don't believe that the real economy serves much of a purpose, and allowing yourself to be led by an friendly idiot backed by a pack of chicken hawks.

Everything else being equal, rolling back the American empire, single payer health care, and some modest tax increases to moderately taxed and under served seem almost more than they deserve. Well, there is that long term inflation risk, but to be honest if America goes down that road we will as well, to maintain our relative position WRT to them. Given that inflation is a tax on the poor, unless you take strong policy measures, things could get nasty... But they already are... Inequality has been growing since Regan, and only trailing here in Canada slightly.

Meh, if all else fails:

Build a wall, and find our Lou Dobbs.

Very true.

Street crime is increasing quickly. Also, because Colombia has been putting heat on the drug trade in recent years, many Colombian criminals have turned up in CR & believe me, these people have no qualms about using violence. I was talking to a guy there last fall who was beaten by a gang of Colombianos. I'm also a member of a board like terb that pertains to CR & there are regular posts about members who end up being crime victims, including police shakedowns for bribes, pickpocketing or even the girls stealing from them.

Don't get me wrong, you can have a great time hobbying in CR, but living there? No thanks.
