Pirate patch

I just downloaded a software package , complete with its patch to make it work without registration.

In scanning with Malwarebytes, it reports the patch as a virus.

The patch itself works as it is supposed to but if I let Malawarebytes remove it, the software does not work.

My question is, is this patch really a malicious virus, or does it just appear as a virus to Malawarebytes because of how it works?

That's the risk you take doing stuff that with Windows.
I would trust Malwarebytes here.
Might be best to look for another clean software package.
