Pimp sentenced to five years in jail
June 25, 2008 12:19 AM - A pimp who hired two teenage girls and earned more than $400,000 running a sex service in Mississauga was sentenced yesterday in Brampton court to five years in jail.
Calling Imani Nakpangi's actions "egregious to the extreme," Justice Hugh Atwood delivered sentence after reading a victim impact statement from one of the young prostitutes, who started working for Nakpangi when she was 15.
"I feel unworthy, dirty, tainted, like nothing," the girl, now 18, said in her statement. "I feel I am only good for one thing — sex."
The teen, whose identity is protected under a court-ordered publication ban, added she has been unable to finish high school and that, financially, Nakpangi left her with "nothing, no clothes on my back, no money in my pocket," court heard.
Crown prosecutor John Raftery had asked the judge to impose a seven-year sentence.
"This was a calculated business," Raftery told court, noting that Nakpangi used the money he earned to live a "lavish, materially-wealthy lifestyle" that included driving a BMW and buying a large home in Niagara Falls.
The defendant's lawyer, Deepak Paradkar, asked for a three-year sentence.
Nakpangi, who's also a father, addressed the judge prior to sentencing and said he regrets what he has done to the two girls.
"I'll be leaving jail a convicted criminal; shameful indeed," he said. "There is no way to turn back the clock."
Nakpangi pleaded guilty last month to human trafficking and living off the avails of prostitution. He admitted to escorting and setting up appointments for two teenage girls he had hired to perform prostitution services.
Court heard that between 2005 and 2007, Nakpangi drove the girls, who were 14 and 15 at the time, to several Mississauga hotels to meet men and perform sexual acts for cash.
The older girl earned $360,000 for Nakpangi, court was told.
"He became her pimp," Raftery said, noting both girls "performed various acts of prostitution and gave their earnings to the accused."
The older girl was robbed at gunpoint during a date with a customer, court heard. She wanted out of the business, but Nakpangi used "intimidation and threats of violence" to keep her working, Raftery said.
He threatened to kidnap the girl's brother and said he would break her nose if she left, court heard.
On one occasion, the girl tried to run away, but Nakpangi "chased her down and assaulted her," Raftery said.
Nakpangi told the girl she had to pay a $50,000 exit fee if she wanted out. She fled from Nakpangi last fall, and contacted police.
The younger girl had been reported missing by the Peel Children's Aid Society, where she was a ward. She earned close to $65,000 for Nakpangi, court head.
Acting on a tip, Peel Regional Police sent an undercover officer to a Mississauga hotel last Dec. 6. The officer, posing as a customer, was greeted at the door by the younger teen.
Police later arrested Nakpangi.
