I am new to digital photography and was wondering which is the best photo editing software (Free or not) for a beginner.

I am using the G10 Powershot and find the editing tool provided not very user friendly.

Thanks in advance.

The G10 is a nice camera. Photoshop Elements is the best IMO. Has all the features of Photoshop that the average user needs. Not free but not pricey either.

Photoshop Elements 7 (not the very latest) is $88.47 at Amazon.

Older versions are even cheaper. When you move up full Photoshop, you won't have to re-learn everything.

For begginners.

If you are a begginer, the easiest thing to use us Splashup ( light ). There is also a more advanced Splashup, but for your needs the light version is good enough. Just search for it on the internet and download it for free. It will probably be all you need for now, let us know how you like it.

My experience with GIMP is that it is too complicated if you just need simple. Infranview is complicated and useless. Photoscape and Picassa is OK, but to get the same simplified go with Splashup ( light ).

I have the G9 and have been using Photoshop Elements 5 (an old bootleg from a friend who got it years ago when she bought her Canon Rebel)

The only problem is that it does not support RAW and seeing that you have the G10 you need to take the time to learn a more powerful tool and t ake advantage of the G10's RAW capability. You paid for it so use it.

I am thinking of taking some courses over the winter because I know that I am not get the most out of my G9 and it stays on AUTO way too often

Get the most current PSE or if you want Adobe just released the BETA of Lightroom 3.o I am now working my way though the online tutorials and I like it much better than my old PSE5.o.

The BETA is good until April 2010.

Photoshop Elements is there best way to go. There are many others that are good but it's Photoshop that all others are measured by. You can also got to workshop help by cameras store and photo clubs and get free or very inexpensive advise. The only down side is that the Adobe site has to be the most unfriendly sites on the net although I've been using Photoshop for years as my #1 and have never had to go there for all but a few inquiries.

Elements can be fully automated or you can pick any process along the way that you want to do by hand, therefore choosing how automatic or manual you want to go. When you are what everybody says they're like, why not choose you.

I wanted to thank everyone for thier input. I am going to look at all of the links as see which application serves me best (who knew their were so many).

I have also contacted my local camera store and have signed up for a few seminars (thanks for the suggestion blackrock).

I use CS3, with Bridge and Camera Raw. I get magazine quality work from my images and retouching that I do with my photography work. I might upgrade to CS4, but currently have no immediate plans too.

Trust me when I say, pick up a trial version of photo shop CS4. Start learning now the basic things you can do.. As said above, youtube is your best source for tutorials.

Dont waste your time with other programs, you will just be behind when you decide to take the plunge

One good benefit If you go with Photoshop Elements is that there is alot of resources to help you learn the software.

Personally I like any books by Scott Kelby:
http://www.amazon.com/Photoshop-Ele...otographers/dp/0321565959/ref=ntt_at_ep_dpi_5

He makes learning it fun and easy and he demonstrates pro techniques and has alot of examples in his books. you could even do playboy and hollywood type image touch-ups just as good as the pros by using his book.
