USA Swimming as SUSPENDED Michael Phelps the Golden Boy of the Olympics for three months as a result of the BONG incident. USA Swimming wants to send a message and make it clear they do not condone drug use in any form.

In the end he'll probably make more in endorsements after his people spin the suspension and he "gets better" and starts winning races again. Americans love to see their heroes fall and then comeback. It's all about the Yankee spirit and all that bullshit.

Thing is, he was on the anti-doping group that was supposed to be setting an example to kids...so this slip up must have annoyed a lot of people.
Personally I don't care if he wants to smoke a joint or not, just as I don't care if Spitzer sees SPs. So long as Phelps was clean going into competitions, who cares if he wants to have a drink, smoke a joint, see an SP, or walk naked through Central Park or whatever. The guy can swim like nobody else in the world. The pot doesn't enhance his swimming performance.
That said, U.S. sponsors can be a nasty bunch if their paid spokesman doesn't act like the all American boy/girl. Remember when Nancy Kerrigan was overheard saying 'this is lame' during the Disneyworld Main St parade? It is plenty lame, but don't say that when they are paying you big bucks to smile and wave and look Disney-cute. The U.S. is obsessed with drugs and, knowing this, it is unwise to smoke pot when you have comapnies paying you millions to act the role of the wholesome all-American boy. That slip up likely cost him millions. Of course he has millions anyway, so he won't hurt that much, but he would have had millions more if he hadn't been caught lighting up. I'm reminded of Robin Williams talking about this a few years ago when a snowboarder got caught testing positive for pot, and it was referred to as a performance enhancing drug. "Marijuana enhances many things. Colours, tastes, sensations, but you are certainly not fucking empowered. When your stoned your lucky to find your own god-damn feet."

I could care less what Phelps does or says or whether or not he sells Cheetos. He can can get high all day and that's OK by me. And at the next Olympics, if I am bored enough to watch it, I will applaud his wins.
