smukke = beautiful, and bunker is what you see in the background of the picture. All along the west coast of Jutland, the germans built concrete bunkers as they expected the invasion to happen there.

So, the Little Mermaid is "smukke"?!! No wonder they compare Denmark to "an unweeded garden".

WW2 is "the worst thing that ever happened" - so not surprising it keeps coming up.
