Have a SanDisk 6-in-1 chip reader I use to transfer my pictures from a digtial camera to my computer. Been working fine for over a year but now when I insert the reader in to my PC slot nothing happens. A message used to always come up asking what I wanted to do but now I get no message.

Did re-boot the notebook. Cleared all the windows and still nothing. It has 2 slots tried both.

Its a ibm think pad and windows xp.

Well, did you try to view the contents of the disc/card via windows explorer?

I bet the last time the window opened you clicked on the "don't show this window every time" option ......

I bet you can still view the contents in explorer......

I also bet you had an app like nero slideshow or something loaded and it asked you if you wanted to view it as a slideshow.

If it was just windows asking this, you probably clicked an app somewhere that is the default for viewing jpgs or whatever is on the card.

Yes thats what I was thinking but I am not a tech head, how do you get in to windows explorer, I click start and look in All Programs but don't see it.

if the above doesn't work, it could be one of many things card readers can be a pain in the ass, i could be here all day telling you stuff to try but best best is let the readers tech support people help you out.

on thing to try is remove your other usb cables reboot and try it again.
if it's anything else i really don't wanna write for hours hehe.

Ok, I found explorer, haven't found the pictures but yeah, SanDisk I will call if I can't get it going.

I did have the chip in backwards last time and tried to push it in-don't ask, the room was dim and I was tried-, wondering if I broke it but I have only one, might get a new one from best buy, they are cheap enough, thanks.

The card will show up as a new drive letter with the name something like: removable media.

It will be most likely way down on the drive list when you open windows explorer.

If you tried to force the card into the reader you might have bent the pins inside the reader. If this is what happened, buy another one because to get the pins all lined up properly again is a bitch....

All this talk about "camera" in windows explorer.

Please read his post: he is NOT plugging his camera into a USB port. He is plugging the card into a reader......DOH.

Its not big of a deal for me, I just use it like once a month. Its not coming up at all, so most likely I need a new card reader. I believe best buy here match price because J & R music world has good prices. Can't be more than $20 and I have some reward credits at B & B.

It be a few days before I get up there.

I was with T-boy at first thinking I must have click "don't show me this again" but since I can't find it-and I don't recall clicking to remove it, I bet I bent those pins.

Does the card still work properly in the camera? I mean, when you take a picture it saves properly on the card?

As K said: in the meantime you can just use the USB cable that came with the camera.....

The tiny little SD card does, its the reader that goes in to the PC slot I think my be damage. Its like the size of a credit card, where as the SD card is a small postage stamp.

If not, I could take my notebook computer to Best Buy with the new card reader and let some young punk there look at it, heck he might get it to work in under 1 min. :p

UPDATE....got my pictures back working. Finally made it up to best buy, went to the "geek squad" first up front, guy was a jerk, really. He was able to see and show me the PC was seeing the card reader but then he went back with my SD card to see if he could see any pictures, he comes back and saids no, your SD card is no good. Well it was used once and put away-got it from J & R Music World from NY so most likely its not a fake-its a San Disk Extreme.

So I say "thanks" and went to the camera area to get a new reader. Well they had on sale a MicroMate reader that goes in the USB port-intsead of the PC slot and a 4 gb chip from SanDisk for just $34. With my reward credit is cost me $5.

Went back home and it works great. The SD chip the geek guy said was no good works great too. Maybe he didn't like my Tampa, Toronto and Niagara Falls pictures on it, ha ha.

As for the PC reader, I don't know if its was broke or not, I think so but BB didn't have it and this little reader is cooler too and smaller.

Glad it worked out for you and for a whopping 5 bucks too lol. Can't beat that....

Probably was the pins in the reader.......if you're feeling adventurous you could take the reader apart and check the pin situation....and if it is the pins go back to BB and shove it in the geek's face and say "man, you totally suck as a geek" lol
