Just bought a new car. Plan on selling my old one privately. In terms of payment what should I be asking for.
Bank draft, certified cheque. Lots of scammers out there .

Agree on a price...take. Deposit. Go with the guy to get a bank draft from the nearest branch. Depends on what the car is worth. If the bank draft is forged he is guilty of fraud. Take. Pic of his drivers licence as well.

Cash (in new 100s) or bank draft.

Whatever you do, do not accept a "money order", or "I'll pay you through ebay / paypal, that way, we are both protected". Both of these are high on the scam list.

Or, you could take a personal cheque from the guy and you keep the car until the cheque clears (takes about a week.) Once your bank confirms that the cheque has cleared, you give him the car. This works well, but takes a bit of time.

Beware if you advertise your car (as I've done several times) that the scammers come out of the woodwork. You will have all kinds of grifters calling you up looking to part you from your money. You'll hear about competing advertising services, guys who will sell your car for you for a fee (upfront of course), guys who can tell you how to get more for your car. They are ALL scammers and simply want your money.

Anyone who calls you up with anything other than buying your car - tell him to fuck off. Trust me on this.

How secure are email transfers, and how much can be transferred that way? What if a fraudster deposits a bum cheque or fake money order and then emails you the cash? Will the transaction be rolled back from your account once the fraud deposit bounces?

Just curious if email transfers might be an alternative to the old standard certified cheque.

Cash if the amount isn't much like less than 5k.

Asks 100s if possible.

Drafts is ok too, you can always ask to meet at the branch of the bank he or she banks with and issue the Draft in person and take it from there.

Or inter bank transfer, but the cost might be more.

Email money transfer has a limit up to 1200 per 24 hours and yes, if CHQ item is NSF, you will take the lost...

Remove your license plates make sure he has ones to put on the car, when leaving your property. Or drive the car, to where it is to be certified.
