Hmmm...just a matter of time for all of us.
Who's next?

_____________________________________________________________

First Jeff Healey, now Patrick Swayze? Is there some sort of horrible Road House curse? Should we secret Ben Gazzara away in a plastic bubble?
The beloved Hollywood actor and dancer was diagnosed in late January with pancreatic cancer that has spread to other organs.

For the past month, Patrick, 55, has been traveling to Stanford University’s prestigious cancer center in Palo Alto for radical chemotherapy, but his doctors are no longer optimistic that the treatments will be successful.

Patrick and his wife Lisa Niemi — who both have pilot’s licenses — have been flying their private Beechcraft plane into Palo Alto’s airport, minutes away from the Stanford Cancer Center, where the actor has received outpatient treatment.

He received three doses of chemotherapy and the tumor shrank, but less than his doctors had hoped for — and Patrick was told he should prepare for the end.

“He was told he could have two more treatments, but his cancer was not responding. In short - they held out little hope for a cure,” said an insider.
We're trying to consider the source here--the last time the Enquirer published something that was true, it was about Barry Bostwick and his family updating their country kitchen or something. But on the off chance that it is true . . . well, the only thing giving us any remote glimmer of comfort is the idea of Patrick Swayze and Chris Farley reunited in heaven, performing their classic SNL Chippendales skit together again. Please recover, Mr. Swayze.

UPDATE: unfortunately, Swayze's rep has confirmed the utterly depressing news.

Wow, truly sad. He was in shape and had a hard body guys dream of having in many of his movies. All for naught. Cancer is bad enough but pancreatic cancer is the worst. I wish him luck.

Sadly true. Often the course of the disease is quite rapid.

That's the truth, my cousin died of it in her early late 40's.

However, the story may not be so grim. Dr. George Fisher, Swayze's physician has released a statement yesteday saying that Swayze has "a very limited amount of disease, and he appears to be responding well to treatment thus far. All of the reports stating the timeframe of his prognosis and his physical side effects are absolutely untrue."

My mother died of pancreatic cancer.

If you get it, you're dead. At most they might buy you a few months.

End of story.

My reaction to reading that article as soon as I read pancreatic cancer was, "oh fuck"

While I am personally aware of the rapid and deadly effects of pancreatic cancer, the following article says Mr. Swayze's health is in good condition, despite reports to the contrary.

http://www.eonline.com/news/article/index.jsp?uuid=95c876d8-ec3c-4835-92fa-31f160865351

From the article:

"Patrick Swayze is undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer but does not have just weeks to live, the actor's reps and doctor said Wednesday.
"Patrick has a very limited amount of disease and he appears to be responding well to treatment so far," Dr. George Fisher, Swayze's personal physician, said in a statement. "All of the reports stating the timeframe of his prognosis and his physical side effects are absolutely untrue."

Why does it strike peoples emotions harder when it is a celebrity?

Go to Princess Margaret or Sunnybrook there are thousands of people getting treated there every month. They are taking chemo and radiation treatments, many of them both at the same time. Many treatment protocols call for daily treatment 5 days a week.

These people don't have planes to fly them back and forth, they don't have limo's. The lucky ones have friends or loved ones to take them to treatments. Some rely on volunteer drivers from the Canadian Cancer Society. The less lucky take the TTC wondering whether they will have the strength to do this all again tomorrow.

You can tell who they are . They are the ones with the hollow cheeks, the slightly yellow pallor to their skin. They don't smile anymore. The ones that wonder how they are going to tell their wife or husband that the Doctor just defined their life in terms of months. Worse , those that have no one to tell.

50% of the people who have cancer that has matastisized (spread from the primary site , or stage 4) die within 2 years. Yet they go through the pain of the treatments. They get the daily injections of poison, they put cream on the raw open wounds in their skin caused by the month-long radiation therapies. They carry on. What choice do they have?

Yes I feel sad for Jeff Healy and Patrick.....but let's extend the same to all the others too. Remember them all when you get that knock on the door in early April and the person with the yellow daffodil lapel pin is standing there.

Who is saying it does?

People express sympathy for people they think they like (celebrities) but it does not hit harder then when it is someone you know personally.

I wasn't referring to people known personally as I doubt many know Healy or Swayze personally . I was just hoping they would remember everyone else a month from now when someone asks them for a few bucks to help out someelse that they don't know either. Someone who less fortunate ( if you can even say that about someone with terminal cancer) .

Thx

My mom died from pancreatic cancer in her 50's. She was diagnosed at a very advanced stage but still lasted about 8 months after diagnosis. The survival rates of pancreatic cancer are the lowest of any type but Patrick is in great shape and if anyone can beat it he could. Of course it depends on how advanced it is and where its located.

One guy who was diagnosed and given a life sentence of pancreatic cancer was Rompin Ronnie Hawkins. And if memory serves me correctly he's still alive and kicking. So it can be beat.

Ronnie actually has a fascinating story.

The doctors told him he was done, but HE was contacted by a 17 year old aboriginal faith healer named Adam from British Columbia.

I read about this kid a few years back that he was just a high school kid in BC but he began to heal people of various diseases, or more acurately, taught people how to heal themselves, including Hawkins.

There was a write up in the Globe and Mail about him.

He used to charge a grand price of $50.00 for his help.

Hawkin's doctors were absolutely blown away by it.

I dunno, somethings in life just can't be explained.

There was an article on Swayze's diagnosis on CTV Canada AM this morning - so there is another source confirming the news (not to suggest that CTV is any more or less accurate). They commented that the success is less than 5% for people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. A lot has to do with early diagnosis, however as I understand, it is hard to detect early. Cancer is such an awful disease ... but there is hope. If you know someone with cancer, give them a hug, tell them that you really do care, and be a friend.
