Hell, I used to live near that corner. It is only a block from the Queen St Mental Hospital, so maybe he wasn't just a panhandler, but murderously insane!!

Panhandlers scare me a heck of a lot more than streetwalkers but LE only arrests streetwalkers because it is "not a crime to be poor" (quoting our fearless mayor here) so panhandlers get a free pass every time. Go figure.

True, Toronto should have a rule against sleeping on the street.

I like to use the New York City example.

When Rudy G. was elected he cracked down on pan handlers, bums, vagrants, graffiti scumbags, vandals etc.

Basically, he told the cops to get off their asses and start enforcing the laws that were already on the books and the courts to start sending the layabouts to jail.

Guess what...

It worked.

You can walk aroun Manhattan and not get bothered by street vagrants and pan handlers one TENTH as much as you get harassed in Toronto.

Why?

Because the cops in NYC are out there doing something about it rather than turning a blind eye to it like they do here in Toronto.

Same goes for the goof balls with the squeegies who think that they should clean your windhield regardless.

Here you've got leftist organizations like the "Ontario Coalition against Poverty" and "Homeless Nation" who only make the problem worse by encouraging people to live on the street.

I don't know if this is a problem in Canada, but the thing I can't stand in the States is the charity solicitors, flower vendors, etc. at intersections. They're even more prevalent than the panhandlers because they feel like they're working for charity or being capitalistic.

Once, when I was in Miami, there were firefighters soliciting for donations at a busy strip mall. All of this should be banned.

Streetwalkers, aside from being scantily clad, don't bother the average driver just trying to get through a red light. Yet, they're the ones who are getting busted. I think these "intersection salesmen" are the ones who should be busted.

In several major cities, uniforms walk into your business & sell you the city police flags/stickers to 'show' support for local police. Guess if biz owner would donate.:(

New York City cleaned up their homeless problem by using the carrot and stick approach. While the police cracked on the homeless, the city also spent a lot of money building affordable housing. New York City also had social workers who patroled the streets forcing the homeless into these housing. They had a database which kept track of everybody. They knew how many homeless people were out there and how many were using the shelters. I think New York City spent hundreds of million of dollars to fix the problem.

You cannot solve the problem by putting all the homeless people in jail. We can solve the homeless problem, but only if we are willing to put in the effort and money.

PLEASE,

The "Homeless Budget" in the city of Toronto is already more than 220 million dollars a year.

It's an industry here like no other place in North America in fact.

By comparison, the bridge budget is about 50 million a year.

Something is out of whack there.

The money is being spent, the problem is getting worse because we are enabling a lifestyle rather than encouraging a change in lifestyle.

Part of the problem is that the leftist weenies who run the City of Toronto wouldn't even allow a census of the homeless to take place. Oh, they started, but after one day, it was shit canned. If memory serves those who make their living off of perpetuating the homeless situation in Toronto were very much opposed to determining exactly how many homeless there are out there and then actually doing something about rather than just the status quo. A lot of people make a lot of money from the homeless situation in Toronto.

The city should run proper homeless shelters for people.

Why should the "city" do this? Did the city tell them to come here? Did the "city" force them out of their homes?

Sorry, I believe in assistance for those that first a) help themselves and b) contribute something back.

Frankly I'd rather see the city put all the money they spend on the homeless into things like mental health and or shelters for abused women.....For eg: I remember an article on a guy who lived in tent city before they tore it down. He had a wife and a job but just didn't make enough for first and last. I say give HIM an apartment because at least he's trying.

WOW. If there are 10,000 homeless in the city, that would be $22,000 each per year to look after them. With that kind of money the homeless should be at least dressed better. City should be providing a concierge laundry service.

Would think the city could find somewhere to cut in a $220 million budget.
