why does it get a bad rap? it has all the conveniences, not far from TO. are there any environmental issues. is the south side any worse than Toronto? is there political will to clean it up, do the police control the streets. it appears undervalued. where are the most picturesque locations...

Downtown Toronto
Oshawa

Great city...I worked for Real Estate firm there for 5 years.

Be carefull which areas....do not go "south" if you want value...as areas around Wentworth/Cedar/Oxford...high crime areas with a lot of transferring families. All Oshawites...know to not move there.

North by Five Points...Nonquon area also very transient, however.

East end...near King and Townline...both south and north of there very good. No high rises.

Top High Schools...........if you have kids. O'Neill, McLaughlin, and Eastdale areas. Elementary schools that are feeder schools for these stand out.

Oshawa has great sports programs for your kids...and also for adults where everyone seems to know each other...plus has good Theatre groups.

Downtown...is a disaster area...where not safe to walk though after dark for druggies. However, within 30-45 minutes you can be downtown Toronto. Also good GO transit connections.

Good value for your homes...and does not deserve the rap it gets. Not a very good erotic play area though. Smile..if you read the reveiws on here..which I would agree with. Most of players are dumping their druggies from surrounding Durham communities as the bigger centre.

High end homes near Camp Samac...by Durham College...and near Pebblestone Golf Course...and in the Glens area...just south of Airport north of Rossland. Some in East Oshawa...just off townline and Olive.

I did like Oshawa though...and lived in East end and it was really nice and safe. Good shopping centre.............called OC.

Oshawa does get a bad rap, but deserves some of it as Kayla described. the downtown is brutal but being a bluecollar GM town you arent going to find a big demand for a Starbucks or other trendy type business. DT there are a couple of nice restaraunts but once you get out of the scuzzy areas as listed above it is like any other suburb town. Theres a new multipurpose arena being built for the Generals (OHL team) DT that will help out also. Most of the nice areas have been mentioned but ill add the North Oshawa area around Simcoe and Rosslandis great too. While most other areas mentioned are newer, this area has great old homes nearing 100 years or so. Lots of character! Masson St, Mary St. Somerville etc. Its a nice town with genuine people but it is scarey after dark in some areas. One other nice place is Lakeview Park. They have really cleaned it up for families. HUGE picnic areas and nice bike paths, clean playgrounds. Cant swim there very well but nice beach to hang out on. Anyway I live in Whitby and we've always bugged those from the "Shwa in a friendly sort of way but its just as nice in many ways as anywhere else and more so than others.

Yup, yup, yup.

Best area indeed. Now that Whitby transit and Oshawa trransit have merged it is even better. There is a full Thorton route, full Rossland route and a full Tauton Route. Whitby even has Sunday service now finally after all these years.

Ummm actually the whole system in Durham has been integrated, including Ajax, Pickering, Whitby and Oshawa. I don't think they included Clarington, but they only have two buses anyway and they rent them from Oshawa

Courtice

Courtice area is also a nice area which is right to the east of Townline Rd.

agreed, I dont think Judas comment is correct at all. I guess technically he said "tend" but id disagree. I have a rental place in Oshawa that in 4 years has gone up 50 grand. Now with the GM plant closing that may change but real estate prices in Oshawa are going up all over.

i've heard that in the near future two new reactors will be announced for darlington. this will probably bring its goods and bads, but property prices in the oshawa area and east will surely be going up.

What Have We Become?

Is it a sad reflection of the SP and MP scene in Durham that the threads in this section have degenerated into discussions about real estate, restaurants, and buying sweaters at the Oshawa Centre? Back to basics anyone?

Thats the problem, there are no basics in Durham. Sad as it is. I guess there is action for some but when you hobby in the big smoke there is no going home. I like the fact that i dont hobby in my neighbourhood though. Although it sucks to have to drive a great distance to have fun when the mood strikes, its safer and more discreet. BTW im getting that sweater tomorrow

Oshawa Real Estate

I was informed by a reputable source today that The Oshawa/Whitby real estate has appreciated by an average of 26% in the last year with the average price being over $303,000.

I'm guessing here - I'm no real estate expert - but I would bet that this increase has had a great deal to do with the number of new homes being built, especially around Park Hill and the other areas north of Taunton.

I'm not saying property value hasn't gone up, but all the new homes will bring up the "average".

The shwa gets a bad rap because people like to put it down becaise of GM. They refer to it as the lunch bucket town, thinking obviously that everbody there works for GM. Durham Region as a whole gets a bad rap. No other people are not very bright, a very uneducated thought. If they could only see the 401 and GO line at rush hour they would then know where the Toronto workforce comes from. There definately are some very nice places to live in and around Oshawa. We unfortunates do not have much of a hobbying hotbed as TO.

Oshawa
Nothing wrong with Oshawa Real estate at all.

The start of the thread was for tips on where to buy in and around Oshawa and as someone who has lived out here all my life save a couple of interludes, I can say Oshawa has finally reached the point where it has been discovered by the great majority of people looking for a way out of that libreal over taxed hole that is Toronto.

First off, as you get farther out in Durham Region, the prices drop. Out here in Bowmanville things are saner than in Pickering and Ajax. Oshawa is the fastest growing city for its size class in Canada, and prices are going up. The talk of GM laying off wont affect this much since much of the layoff's will be retiring workers who might take packages to get out. Half of the plant commutes in from farther out anyhow. My first house in Oshawa I owned for 15 months, and I gained 20% of the original purchase price after all my fee's were paid for the sale and moving into my house here in Bowmanville. No where else can you say that in the GTA where the average working guy can afford a house. Understand also, that house was in a slightly less attractive area compared to many in Oshawa.

Oshawa gets a bad rap, but it has its rough edges. Downtown is not there but few Ontario cities have escaped this problem. Overall though, avoid south of the 401, find a good neighbourhood, and settle in and the city will not disapppoint. Ya people here are down to earth and not looking for a Starbucks on every corner, but if you are honest, who wants to live amongst a bunch of phonies anyhow?

Oh ya, as for the "hobby", it is coming along here slowly. Things are better now than they were, and hey, Toronto is 45 minutes away ( to downtown too ) so you aren't missing much by living out this way....
