I heard a few times on 680 news that the LE arrested up to 20 in a sweep yesterday or today in downtown Shwaa. Anyone have more details on if it was a street walk sweep or something else? They said it was due to repeated complaints from neighbours so it leads me to believe it was the crack whores downtown but I hope my favorite agencies are ok!!

They seem to do this a couple of times a year. I think they are just trying to show the citizens and the business owners they are trying. They admit they can't wipe it out, but I think they just want to keep it under control, especially with the kiddies going back to school now.

- The 46 charges are prostitution and drug related. They don't breakdown how many of each. Could be 3 prostitution and 43 drugs. I could believe that.
- They say they arrested 25 different women over 4 days. I would challenge anyone to drive the streets of downtown Oshawa late at night for a couple of hours trying to spot 25 different streetwalkers. I would bet you won't see 4 in four days! Also, they're all apparently stupid enough to get arrested (kind of hard to believe that none of them noticed the sting going on)! Police tend to wildly exaggerate the numbers in these stories to improve their perceived effectiveness, reinforce the need for increased funding, and for deterrent purposes.
- The downtown businesses complained? People want to use the downtown for shopping? When, at 1:00 am!? That was laughable. When streetwalking did exist in Oshawa, it was never a daytime phenomenon. Anyone who's spent time in downtown Oshawa knows the whole place locks up tighter than a drum after 6:00 p.m.
- This is the same police force that concocted the case against Guy Paul Morin. Bear that in mind.
In short, I'm not buying this story. For this story to be true, every hooker in Oshawa must dive into the bushes as soon as they see the headlights of my car!
The story was in the Toronto Sun today Thursday Sept.6 2007.The charges were broke down in there and are as follows: 16 prostitution charges,5 drug offences and 25 breach of court orders,mostly dealing with ignoring instructions to stay out of specific areas.

There are some skanky looking drug addicts on Oshawa streets. When the cops arrest them they lock them up for a while and before you know it they are on the streets again . I would presume with the YWCA closed up these people have nowhere to go. I don't think this helps these girls it is a vicious cycle. I think Durham police should look after some real crime like some of the drug dealers you see everywhere hanging around street corners.

I feel far more threatened by the drug dealers I see hanging around downtown than the prostituted I see. Of course, they are usually standing together.
