The original version of "Lord Of The Rings" made by Warner Brothers in 1944 has been recently unearthed by film scholars. The casting is very inspired, Peter Lorre as Gollum is excellent.

Peter Lorre ! Oh man I remember him from the Maltese Falcon and of course Casablanca.

Had to add, a very unique actor filled unique roles.

There was a 1978 cartoon version, one of the voices was John Hurt. The scenes from the Peter Jackson version are close to being the same from the cartoon. He must of used it for inspiration.
