Nothing worse than religious fanatics......from all religions . You have to wonder whether organized religion has caused more harm than good over the years .

To say that organized religion as a whole is bad because of the extremist actions of certain radicals is akin to saying the entire sex industry is bad because there are pimps who abuse women.

And we all know how we hate that...

Actually 2 seperate points Goober . The non-fanatics have a lot to answer for as well . I take it you were never an alter boy or were never homeless in Montreal wondering what the grey nuns were doing investing a small portion of their wealth ( $90 million ) in a shopping centre development scam . And the list goes on and on and on ......none of these would be classified as fanatics .

One of the basic tenets of the Christian faith (the only religion I'm really familiar with) is that everyone is inherently bad. To judge an entire group by a small sampling of the worst apples is not right, IMHO. Fanatics or just plain "not nice" people alike.

Are you saying that no Atheist or Agnostic has ever cheated someone out of money? Well, if an Atheist has abused a child/embezzled money/cheated the homeless/started a war/hated another group of people, then ALL ATHEISTS must be bad, by your logic.

There are a whole lot more of the "well meaning Christians" in the world who try to live their lives "good" than the people you refer to.

If someone is to subscribe truly to the Christian faith, then they must "love their neighbour as themselves". The examples quoted in the article and by you, train, aren't abiding by that philosophy. Many try to, however.

Look ....I was short in my comments because I realized that talking about religion is a totally no win situation . The whole point was to comment on the ORGANIZED part (and not the followers in general or the basic tenents of any religion) which I had attempted to do . Obviously I failed because Goober feels that I have attacked religion and religious people .I meant to only address the shortcomings of certain of the religious bureaucracy .

I'm sorry that I offended you but I stand by my distrust/dislike of many high level religious leaders and their policies/positions on religious tolerence , sexual abuse , financial aid v.s amounts spent on "administration ", treatment of women and birth control ( amongst others ) .

This is a stupid argument that is not new and similar to that whole nonsensical Canada vs. U.S.A. debate, in that it could go on forever . I will resist the temptation to expound further and will not comment again on this topic .

Just A Little Sheepish!

Those in the know of any religion, know that those not in the know don't know any better than to follow their nose!

Where would any religion on earth be if weren't for the sheep!
They are either shorn, or butchered for stew, chops or their fine rack!
Of course, I speak of lambs!
Agnus Dei to you all!

Sorry folks! Just feeling real baaaaad today!

Oh gosh who started this thread. Religion is a farce and is "man's" interpretation of our past over the years. King George wrote the modern day christian bible to suit his own purposes.
Basic premise for religion is divide and conquer the masses. People are willing to argue over which religion is better, but at the end of the day we all want the same thing.
Yes i believe in a higher power, no one can truly explain how we came about.
But do you really care is your mp is christian, jew, muslim, luthean, seven day adventist, mormon, buddha, sikh, catholic, greek orthodox or jehovah witness.

Discussions about the merits of religion between someone who has faith and someone who bases his beliefs in reason and logic, can never be resolved. Neither can win. Scientists can marshall ALL the data in the world, but they'll never make some people believe that man did not walk the earth at the same time as dinosaurs. Faith is faith. It's impervious to logic.

I think the wisest course for those of us who do not believe is to recognize that millions of people derive comfort and hope from their faith. To that end, it's a force for good in the world.

I know a nuclear scientist that is also a devout catholic...left me scratching my head when I found out.

Some people find comfort in religion and some find direction.
Are you insinuating that smart people shouldn't be religious? If you are, that is blatant prejudicial stereotyping that shouldn't be tolerated from someone with "Super Moderator" status, IMO.

Geez, even Steven Hawking acknowledges that the existence of God is a probability.

Goober....give it a rest. And while you are at it how about taking some responsibility for the actions of organized religions instead of "baaaaaing " ( see Willy's comment ) . This has got nothing to do with the existence of God or following the ' golden rule ' but simply an opinion on certain less favourable aspects of religion .

Meh. Why do I need to take responsibility for something that I haven't done?

I said it's the extremist wings that give religion a bad name. But to throw the baby out with the bathwater is wrong, IMHO.

I will not give it a rest. Lalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalala!!!!!!

Sheik,
I've always been fascinated by how closely religion and science are aligned (even art has its place in there), although many fail to see the similarities. Simply put, both religion and science seek answers to ultimate questions. I came across this article yesterday, it covers a multitude of topics, but I thought you might find it interesting, in light of your comments in this thread.

In a trap
Exasperation!!

In the public forum, it is suggested that there are three topics that should never, arbitrarily, be brought up!
They, of course, are Religion, Politics and Sex!
Oops! In this public forum, there are only two!
Now, let's see, which two would they be?

Willywants (to stay on topic!)

PS: Did you hear the one about the local priest and the mayor of the town who bumped into each other at the local brothel?
Me neither, but it may have the makings of a good joke if anyone wants to finish it!
