Wow this is amazing and I have been waiting, anticipating and hoping for this to arrive for at least the past 10 years. While people fear it and think of it as a double edge sword I am super excited to know I can potential leave my house with just a phone and don’t need to worry about wallets anymore or paying with physical cash. Hopefully they are smart enough to allow it to work with Apple wallet and the Google equivalent. Also with the upcoming passports this would work seamlessly. Although I can see if this falls in the wrong hands or corrupt and controlling governments could be abused. How about then assigning people a social or approval rating and so forth and enabling ease of tracking. As long as they don’t start banning crypto here I am excited with this change. There is only so much you can hold technological progress back. Hopefully the same technology innovation finds a way to keep these people in power accountable.

I am not in favor of this too much room for abuse

what if you get pulled over and the phone is dead or no signal (if you need connection to work) screens are hard to see in the sun do you really want to hand your unlocked phone to the police?

Are they going to make cell phones free? To presume everyone has or wants or can afford a cell phone is extremely ignorant, privileged and elitist.

I get it is optional now, but if COVID taught us anything, things change real fast.

I agree, I would never had my unlocked phone to a cop to take to his car for 10 mins to write me a ticket. Plus my phone would shut off on him and he would need to come scan my face again.

As long as they allow people option for both.

My phone never shuts off as far as I can remember. It’s also waterproof and needs my face to open or the code and everything is encrypted.

I think even the CIA had trouble decrypting iPhones in the past and wanted Apple to do it but they refused.

As for internet connection it is not needed. If the pass is saved in Apple wallet along with your other cards it works and gets pulled up anytime and can even work with the phones NFC chip.

Also never had the problem with sunlight.

I don’t see that happening as long as they allow both options but I image would probably make it super inconvenient to get around the system like wait here in this super long and slow line in front of this machine or a teller to validate your ID type of deal before entering the store or for a service.

Like how many times do we unnecessarily wait in line when we should just have the ability to get a text or notification that your number is up or will come up get ready type of dealio especially with these new social distancing practices.

The banks and many stores tried that ”check in” through an app or online and it never worked. I just ended up walking into the bank and calling directly to a store.

It’s another way to exclude those who can’t afford a smartphone.
Same with the city no longer issuing garbage/recycling calendars, low tech is so much cheaper and easier for many.

I'm fine with carrying a wallet with psychical ID cards.
I would prefer 1 card with SIN#, OHIP# and DL on it along with my photo. That would be easier to me.

Do you lose more losing a wallet with all your cards, cash government ID, Heath cards and SINs. How about the damage this can do to your identity and using your credit cards to commit fraud in your name. By the time you prove that waste all your time trying to cancel your credit cards and get more SINs the damage is way past done.

When you lose your phone they need a pin and/or Face ID or fingerprint to access your encrypted data. You can actually wipe your phone remotely clean if this is ever an issue.

Which has more potential for short and long term damage? You can easily wipe your phone and re-enter new cards if the phone is stolen.

I think it’s a common misconception. You are actually safer this way. The part about sharing all of our personal data, habits, and close circles with private entities is already done . You know the saying when it’s free you are the product but people like to fixate and focus on governments and big brother fucking them when they are hardly competent to do anything useful or keep up with the progress of private institutions. It’s an easy blame and smoke screen people keep falling for. The personal data and breaches are already done by private organizations and they are selling this data of our habits and other personal info for a profit and nobody seems to care.

How many people will click a link in text, or on social media that installs spyware?

AFAIK this is not possible on iPhone unless it’s jailbroken. Obviously this might change but I doubt the chances of harm to us are that high. You probably have a greater chance of your credit card being hacked during the process of paying for something on an unsafe site or using public wifi or having your password breached.

As a side not currently a cop can read and use everything in your phone as soon as they have it They could legally copy it (cloning) for future investiage as well as put a key logger on it. Canada has no digital privacy rights to speak of after you hand them your phone.

Since this is terb this info will be of help:

What should I do if police found something incriminating in the phone?

Whether evidence can ultimately be accepted in court and used against you is decided when matters go to court. If you believe police are using information obtained by searching your phone against you, give us a call. We can examine your case to determine if police breached your rights when they seized and searched your phone.

While the courts have allowed police to search cellphones without warrant after an individual has been arrested, there are clear guidelines and rules police must follow. As experienced Criminal Lawyers, we know what to look for and have often found success by identifying any mistakes police have made in your arrest and search of your phone.

LOL funny. I still hear the gibberish that bitcoin is unhackable (has been hacked, will be hacked) If you have a phone and your not a computer scientist, its hack able, password breachable - the keylogger is one way to get a password for example. Heat analysis of your keyboard is another for simple passwords - for more complex ones the auto lock out will be sufficient to stop it most of the time.
The reason that phone theft has been low, is that high volume targets like hospitals, the pentagon make the effort to reward ratio not worth it. But if phones become standard then make a few programs that automatic the process will be worth it.

The phone app that steals money of wifi tap cards for example generates to little money compared to risk - you need be near people to steal ther visa cards for only a 100 bucks per person. But tapping into all your accounts for the same effort . . .

Most people did not realize the amount of bank machine thefts until it got totally out of control

Safer?
Ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!!

As the various Olympic athletes will attest to. If you travel to China or Russia, your Phone is hacked within 5 minutes of getting into range of public WiFi. And all that Government ID information is sold to black market Passport makers the next day.

Safer my Ass.
