Ontario’s Superior Court of Justice has certified a class-action lawsuit against Uber Technologies Inc., which advances a fight to get some of the platform’s Canadian couriers and drivers recognized as employees.

You own your own vehicle and set your own hours, but want full time employee benefits. Always seemed to me like having your cake and eating it too...

This is stupidity. Uber isnt a taxi company, they are a software company that provides software for a cut.

All drivers are independent contractors are they not? They are not paid wages or salary based, correct? And I guess that is what they are trying to fight for.

But they don’t create shifts, drivers can sign on and off when they want right?

I don’t think will go anywhere. Uber is not actually in control of the drivers. The drivers are using the software to work.

Fully agree with you, It's such nonsense. You can have Uber with independent contractors, or you can have a taxi company with employees - that just won't be Uber, or have the social benefits of Uber. It's a different version of the union argument: You can have 20,000 crappy jobs, or you can pay a higher wage, go bankrupt and have no jobs. Your choice.

I see the point of the arguments stated above, but I think it is important so the younger of those in the work force can go to the gig economy and realistically sort their expectations.

Maybe you want a job that pays 4-8% less in the same sort of situation and yet allows you sick pay and to accrue vacation pay, and has some hope of severance benefits perhaps?

I think that would be great, maybe someone will start a company like that. However that's not Uber's business model, and they aren't profitable as it is.

Bahahahahaha... listen to you guys. All want cheap cheap rides at someone else's expense.

The internet has made it possible for workers to be hired an fired in the span of 10 minutes or less. No rights. No protections. And everybody cheers.... until it happens to them.

I am surprised that the drivers went to court, rather than getting a ruling from CRA. Should the CRA rule that they are employees, the amount paid to the drivers would be considered their net pay, and Uber and its directors and officers would be personally on the hook for all the un-remitted deductions (EI, CPP, Income Tax.)
