Is there such a thing as an online hard drive?
Somewhere to store my files
(photos, music)

If so, can someone point me to a reliable provider of one
(preferably free)

I just bought a new computer and would like to transfer files from my old to my new. (the Cd burner is dead as is my external hard drive)

I thought this would be a good way of going about it as it would also double as a back up should my computer crash.

thanks in advance for your input!

You could use an email account. and send files as attachments to yourself.

Or sign up for a website account, such as geocities. I think there's a max size for a file though, and it takes a long time to upload/download large files. I'd just buy an external hard drive if you're going to be dealing with large files. They're not that expensive if you go to chinatown.

Just put them both on the network, mount the drive from the old computer onto the new compter, and copy away.

Why don't you look into Rapidshare.com, Megaupload.com or Sendspace.com.

You can upload files to these servers and send the links to your friend so that they can download your files from the link. Else, you can keep the links for yourself and use it as your offsite hard drive.

For the free accounts, there is a expiration date for storage of the files. For premium account, there is no expiration date.

I only use the free accounts, so I'm not sure of the terms and conditions. You need to look into it and see what suits you.

Safer and more secure way is to buy a USB drive and copy your porn there, I mean word files there..

250GB USB drives are under $100.

Spend $20 and buy a 4-port switch, or whatever they cost. Plug both computers in with blue ethernet cable. "Share" your drive, and then it will be visible from the other computer. This will be oh so much faster than trying to upload all your files to the internet and then download them again. Like, days and days faster.

If the data contains any personal info, don't do it. Image people you don't know being able to access every file you upload.

I don't care how secure their marketing says they are. At the very least, their admins will have access to everything.

In my opinion, a better solution is to take the hard disk from the old computer, temporarily put it in the new computer, boot up and then transfer the files to the new hard disk.

Hell, I'll do that for you for a small fee (assuming that you live in the GTA).

Most computer shops will also do this for you for a small fee as well.

I would only bother setting up a switch if you have a use for the old computer and plan on keeping it around.

The keywords in the above responses are "personal files"

If it's personal the moment you put it on someone else's server it's no longer personal. it is available to the owners of the server and potentially LE if need be.

If the material is sensitive to you copy it over to a removable hard drive. Keep personal things..personal. Don't take chances.

Get an External Hard Drive

Have to agree with and second this advice.

Miss Maya,

May I suggest that you stay away from online storage companies. I know of a couple of them, but with allot of types of information that can be passed soo easily over the W.W.W. I don't trust it myself.

I suggest you invest in a little network system at you're home or office and buy this little unit. http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=509 It is cheap and doesn't take long to setup. That way you always have you're information very close to you when you need, and only you can have personal access to it. Also there is no down time if the "Online storage site" is having problems. You can also set this up for you're friends that can access it from a different computers online. That will take a little more work, but in the end you know where you're information is located and you can secure it even better.

Here is a link to get the full package with drives included.
