My mother gets a call from someone saying he is her grandson. We all live in the US. Name is correct, even sounds like her grandson, my nephew. He wants $2800 wired to him ASAP to get out of jail for DWI. Help Grandma, PLEASE!!! Luckily, my mothers the last one you want to call after getting picked up for DWI. A night in jail might do you a little good. She's a loving mother/grandmother but not ready to jump through hoops for a drunk.

She calls local police to verify. It's phoney (of course). Police say the call is from Canada and the $2800 was going to Peru. Even I have a Canadian phone # (Google) so who knows where it really came from.

What's weird is they live in 2 different states with different last names. Anyone else had a similar experience or know how they matched the 2 of them?

Last year a client of mine received a similar call. Now my client is a very very sophisticated and well know Toronto businessman and he was fooled. He called me and I could see it was a scam. I am sure there must be people falling for it because at least in my clients case the name and location (Florida) were correct.

I have heard of this scam before, it is just a ploy to get fast money. The best thing to do is to tell them that you have called the police and their calls are now monitored.
