So have you been there?
I heard there is a lot of crime directed at tourists in Brazil ...
There's crime all over the place. It is not significantly worse in Rio. I've been 4 times and never had any trouble other than rip-off fares from taxis which pay to park in front of clubs.
I know others who have been without trouble as well. i do know one guy who had some stuff snatched off the beach but that can happen anywhere. I also know one guy who got mugged while stumbling home drunk. Then again I know a guy who had the same thing happen at Queen and Bathurst while stumbling home drunk.
It's really pretty easy. Don't wear jewelry. Leave your passport and wallet in the hotel and just take 1 credit card and a small amount of cash when going out. Stay in the Zona Sul (southern half of the city. Ipanema and Copacabana, Leblon, Lemme, Flamengo and Jardin Botanico). Don't wander around drunk and, also, take cabs after dark. (Just not the ones in front of the club. Walk down to the corner and flag one down.)
You really need to go to Help disco and see 400 or more SPs in one place, or go to a Termas before you really know what hobbying is all about.
