For those of you thinking about travelling to Costa Rica and perhaps considering squeezing a few hobbies here and there between hiking, surfing, and enjoying the beauty of the country, wanted to share my experience. The post is long (got carried away a bit), but please feel free to skip the boring parts

First of all, it would be unfair not to say a few words about Costa Rica itself. I must say the country is gorgeous. I really enjoyed the scenery, weather, and the wild life. The country and the people are very friendly, and you generally feel safe (of course, unless you roam into wrong areas at the wrong times - keep reading - it's Central America after all). From enjoying hot springs in Arenal, to surfing, hiking in the mountains, or simply relaxing on some of the most beautiful beaches in the world - Costa Rica has so much to offer! On top of that, the population is very friendly towards tourism (one of the main sources of revenue), which makes your experience very pleasant. Transportation between major towns and cities is well developed and relatively cheap and the roads are good. I was planning on renting a car, but then decided to commute using taxis and shuttles, and saved quite a bit as a result. Renting a car is expensive due to extremely pricey mandatory insurance. Also, I don't speak more than 5 words in Spanish, and I didn't have any major issues.
Anyhow, onto interesting stuff... my trip involved staying at a few places in Costa Rica (San Jose, La Fortuna, Jaco, and Manuel Antonio). While I at least try to exhaust other options first (e.g. tinder, hooking up at the bars, etc.) before paying, I must say those comments online claiming it's easy to hook up with other tourists or locals while travelling are grossly overestimating the chances. In my experience, for each success you go through 5-10 failures. Of course, your chances are a matter of knowing where to go, experience and looks, but if your time in the country is limited, it means by virtue of probability, you may very well come back home with your balls still full (and, worse, your heart broken) if you resort only to 'freebies'
La Fortuna and Manuel Antonio are incredible places from scenery standpoints, but there isn't much night life going on there. There is some tourist and local action at the bars, particularly in La Fortuna, but not much else. In La Fortuna, there is a bunch of massage studios, but the locals say unless you speak to the right girl and pay the right price, they won't even let you fully undress. Those are legit massage studios in other words. Manuel Antonio is even quieter than La Fortuna
There is definitely more night life in San Jose. There are a few hotels that are extremely friendly towards prostitution. The most famous one is del Ray. However, I personally didn't go there because Jan Jose was the last stop of my trip and I was already pretty exhausted and didn't feel like exploring. Also, and it's important, San Jose felt VERY UNSAFE at night, and most locals advise you against being outside after dark.
Now, Jaco. Oh my... what a great place that is. It's lively and fun. The beach is long and there is a lot to do. And at night.... at night you go to Cocal's beach bar and get blown away by, perhaps, the largest you've seen group of very good looking women all ready to sleep with you. Girls start coming around 7pm I believe, but the later it gets, the more girls arrive. At the peak, I wouldn't be surprised if there were over 80 girls. 80! All forms and shapes, handmade and natural, petite and tall, dark and pale, young and mature, and anything in between. The majority of them are latinas, but I also saw several white girls, and a couple of asians.
On my first night, after having a few drinks and roaming the area for about 30 min searching for the right girl, I targeted one really hot looking Colombian 'chica'. In her 30s, she is extremely hot looking and fit with manmade d-cups. She named the price - $200, but her English was very basic, so I couldn't really negotiate services. She said I'd be happy... Alright then... I decided to just take the risk and see where it gets me. You must take a cab to your hotel, unless you are staying at Cocal, otherwise they won't go with you, and your hotel MUST be chica friendly. If you take her to your hotel and the hotel doesn't let her in, depending on the girl, she might ask you to pay for her time and if you refuse.... well, you're in their territory
Anyways, as we entered the hotel she checked in with the security (they make sure girls are not underage). We made it to my room and she asked for the money. I made an attempt to suggest I'd pay after we are done, but she said no. I didn't want to resist too much as it was my first encounter in the foreign country and I was just testing the ropes. She put some romantic music on and started slowly undressing me and herself. As she took my dick out of my shorts she asked for a condom! It turned out girls there do NOT have condoms on them but would not have sex with you if you don't have one... bummer. Thank God I had one in my luggage. After a few minutes of cbj, we moved to sex, tried a few different positions, and 10-15 minutes later I popped. We lied down for a few minutes, she told me about her family and that she had a kid. She asked if I wanted something else, I said a massage would be nice... and then she said it would be another $50. Khm. After getting used to hourly rates in Toronto and unlimited mileage, I was taken aback by the pay-per-use nature of that particular arrangement. So I politely refused, got her a cab and took her back to Cocal.
On the following night, after I almost gave up on finding somebody I wanted to spend time with, a rather pleasant and soft spoken girl, about 5'6", approached me at Cocal (I mean you'll be approached by the average of 5 girls every minute, but the conversations will be limited to "hey babe") . That girl was different though - she asked a very personal question about me and a certain element of my appearance, and started a conversation. Her English was very good. I bought her a drink and suggested we go to the quieter area of the bar to discuss the services. I wanted bbbj, cim and covered sex. She said bareback is extra $50 (although her price started at $150) but a firm no on cim. So, I thought to myself that was already an improvement from the night before. Again, mid to early 30s (also has a kid), but this time the girl was Cota Rican from San Jose. Also manmade dcups. Her body was about 7, compared to Colombian girl's 9. But her services... God she was good! The way she did bbbj and the way she moved her thighs and hips during sex - I don't know what she did and how she did it, but I could barely hold for more than 3 minutes. I would never haggle with a girl, but paying $200 for 3 minutes felt like a rip off. To my surprise, she made me pop the second time within just 10 minutes while usually it would take me who knows how long for the second time to happen. So, in other words, her skills were amazing! She then offered to stay overnight for another $50, but at that point I was so exhausted that I didn't feel like having any more sex - just wanted to collapse on my bed and pass out
On a third night a picked up a very young and inexperienced girl who started at $150. At that point I was already tired from partying three nights in the row and couldn't keep my guy always up. After 20 minutes of trying I told her it was ok and called it a day. She seemed a bit disappointed and thought there was something wrong with her. I said she was great and that I was just tired. I paid her the full price, got her a cab back to Cocal and that was the end of my adventure in Jaco as in the morning I left for Manuel Antonio.

- Sex in Jaco is expensive! While, relatively speaking, $200US is comparable to what you'd pay in Toronto for an hour, there is no GFE there and no unlimited mileage. You pay for each shot
- You can buy cialis and viagra there without any prescription (pharmacies are on every corner)
- You MUST bring your own condoms
- The majority of the girls have their breasts augmented
- Most girls speak very basic English, and if you don't know Spanish, negotiating services would prove to be a real challenge
- You may encounter some VERY graphic fights at Cocal between the girls. Keep in mind most of them are hot blooded latinas, and they may get very... emotional, very quickly
- NEVER EVER go to the beach in Jaco after dark. My friend got robbed and hit in a head with a rock because he thought he knew better. All locals would tell you to stay away from the beach at night. The city is safe at night though - cops are everywhere
- Make sure your hotel is chica friendly. Call the hotel before you book and confirm or do your research online
- Staying at Cocal might be convenient, but it's basically a brothel
- There's a bunch of guys outside of Cocal selling drugs (from weed to pills and coke). Cops know about them and simply let them be. If you're not into that stuff just tell those guys 'pura vida' and they would leave you alone
- Several hotels have small in-house casinos, including Cocal. Only one place offers Texas Hold'em though (in case you're a player)
