Since we are on this topic, this is sort of quasi cold fusion....

http://www.physorg.com/news10336.html

"....A team of researchers from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Purdue University, and the Russian Academy of Sciences has used sound waves to induce nuclear fusion without the need for an external neutron source, according to a paper in the Jan. 27 (2006) issue of Physical Review Letters......"

"......By bombarding a special mixture of acetone and benzene with oscillating sound waves, the researchers caused bubbles in the mixture to expand and then violently collapse. This technique, which has been dubbed “sonofusion,” produces a shock wave that has the potential to fuse nuclei together, according to the team...."

I once made the police appear by playing my stereo too loud. That's sort of the same thing, isnt it?

Cool.

No mention of what temperature the fusion occured. Fusion usually occures at super high temperatures.

The sound waves must be really high frequency to have a wave lenght short enough to effect atoms.

This was debunked last year. The problem was that the measured spectrum was consistent with radioactive decay of the lab equipment and didn't necessarily prove the presence of nuclear reactions. There were some attempts to refute this hypothesis as to the cause of the neutrons detected; however, the counter claims were still flawed.

Purdue set up a committee to investigate claims from several people, including some of the original researcher's co-workers, about "something being amiss" during the experiments. The findings were released back in February of this year and while they cleared the original researchers of any wrong doings, it also said that further research into this topic was required in order to validate the claims.

"...On February 7, 2007, the Purdure University committee determined that "the evidence does not support the allegations of research misconduct and that no further investigation of the allegations is warranted", and that "vigorous, open debate of the scientific merits of this new technology is the most appropriate focus going forward.".[23][24]..."

"....In November 2006, Edward R. “Ted” Forringer, Ph.D. and undergraduates David Robbins and Jonathan Martin of LeTourneau University presented two papers at the American Nuclear Society Winter Meeting, claiming replication of neutron emission during a visit to the meta-stable fluids research lab at Purdue University. ..... After this report, Purdue's investigation cleared Taleyarkhan of the charges, ....."

Although I'm not crazy about Wikipedia as a reference, that article explains the case pretty well.
