Notebook: Cracked LCD Screen

I dropped my notebook case on the floor and it caused the screen to develop a crack and a kind of black ink is smearing all over LCD from inside.

I took it in to the store and replacement price is 285. plus tax on a 12.1" Asus notebook that only costed 299. plus tax in the first place when I bought it new 8 months ago.

Just wondering if anyone knows some independant retail outlet that can replace screen at a better price.

the hobby needs more capitalism
It doesn't make good economic sense. Especially on a netbook as it sounds that's what it is.

Backup and replace....

You can plug a cheap monitor into it and use it as a desktop....

Yea, that's what I was thinking.
You'd think the market would let you fix a cracked screen for 50% of what the thing costs new; but, that's not the way things are in the netbook world.
