Denmark and Russia are on a collision course regarding the North Pole, according to an official report Denmark’s Defence Intelligence Service is set to release its annual risk assessment report and in it, will outline the potential conflict with Russia...

Denmark’s Defence Intelligence Service is set to release its annual risk assessment report and in it, will outline the potential conflict with Russia over rights to the North Pole, reports the Danish national broadcaster DR.

Due to global warming, the seas around Greenland and the North Pole will become more accessible to shipping and oil exploration.

The Russians have got their eye on the area and the intelligence service expects that before long, Denmark, and thus Greenland, will be challenged diplomatically and militarily

The irony being of course that with the Arctic soon to be an open ocean as it continues to warm, there will no longer be a North Pole that could be marked in ice as the pole. What ever will Santa do now for a home? This has gotta piss of the Mrs.

Indeed I have no reason to disbelieve the Danish Defense Intelligence Service. Everything I’ve read from the Russian side would agree with this.

Is Canada irrelevant on this issue (been a while since I've read about it)? I know we came to the game of mapping underwater and staking our claim on the arctic, but I didn't know we'd lost out before a winner was declared.

Food for thought.Think back to the cold war.It got pretty icy at times. Our only real physical connection to Russia was proximity through Alaska.Fast forward(if scientists are to be believed) 50 years from now. That huge mass of ice between Russia and Canada is now 1.Islands 2.Open water.

I find it hard to believe that the status quo would stay the way it is.We'd be firmly nestled between 2 of the 3 world superpowers(China would be by then too)with ALOT of land up for grabs and unless we start bulking up we'd be a joke to any military incursion by Russia.Geography would change everything.

Only Congress can declare war.

You would know that if you were to read the paper you disregard, The CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

You are beyond naive. Every President since FDR that has gone to war simply no longer bothers to ask for a formal declaration. Way easier just to ignore the Constitution. Congress tried to restore some balance with the War Powers Act, but of course every President since has ignored that as well.

Full circle eh? War being an Executive Power. What do you suppose it is in Canada - perhaps a reserved power?

I don't see you having another option militarily....

Most of the world's oceans are open water, free for any country to roam with or without weapons.
What's the problem if the Arctic is the same?

As long as everyone respects the coastline and their shore limits there should be no problem.

What happens if someone discovers oil in the middle of the Pacific Ocean? Who gets to keep it? Did the Russians plant a flag at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean as well?
