CNN) -- Eighteen people, including two soldiers, were killed Saturday in a gunbattle between the Mexican army and organized-crime suspects in the Mexican resort town of Acapulco, the Mexican Ministry of Defense said Sunday.

The incident began about 7 p.m., when the soldiers went to a location called Avenida Rancho Grande in Acapulco "to exploit information obtained through an anonymous tip," the ministry said in a statement. The soldiers were met by gunfire, it said.

Five people were arrested in connection with the shootout. Two soldiers and 16 gunmen were killed, and nine soldiers were wounded, the statement said.

The gunmen were not identified, but the statement called them "members of organized crime."

Authorities seized 36 large-caliber weapons, 13 small-caliber weapons, two grenade launchers, 13 fragmentation grenades, 3,525 rounds of various caliber ammunition, 180 charges and eight vehicles, the ministry said.

They say it's almost open warfare in the Mexico / U.S. border cities.

I try to avoid 3rd world countries. Thailand is another country that I would avoid. Ever noticed how many Westerners who go to Thailand end up dead?

Been to Mexico once-to Acapulco :p -weather was perfect, sunny and hot everyday..prices were great to, could walk over to a small store and get a bottle of soda pop and a bag of chips and get change back from $1 US dollar.

But never went back and decided that over there before I even left. Seeing cops walking around with machine guns two or three abreast-they always had a machine gun on them-made me worry why they needed them. This was back in 2005 before the crackdown started.

Got 3 nice lap dances for $25 and she was a "hot" 18 year old but I decided to leave since I was low on cash-wasn't planing on going, some guy talk me in to it coming back from dinner. (I did buy a bottle of beer too). Well leaving was a bitch-the door guys started talking in Spanish and pointing to a blank check pad..I just started to walk to the main strip, got there but the dude who talked me in to the place was behine me..he started yelling to two cops on the sidewalk, I wave down a cab and look one cop in the eye from a distance..he then turn his head and I went right back to my hotel and stayed out of the strip clubs after that, ha ha ha.

Yeah, once was enough for me.

Few weeks ago two young couples from California went across the border 20 and 19 years old, two males, two females..they all four were found dead in Mexico near the border. One gal did have cocaine in her system and the way they were killed-slowly-lead the police to believe they were killed by some drug runner gang...of course nobody was arrested for the four murders.

Officials Probe Drug Connection in Tijuana Slayings

KTLA News

May 16, 2009

SAN DIEGO -- Mexican prosecutors were trying to determine whether four young people found strangled, beaten and stabbed to death in Tijuana were involved with the country's violent drug trade or innocent victims of a terrible crime.

The victims, two men and two women, had apparently crossed the border into Tijuana to party.

Their bodies were found last Saturday morning, according to a news release from the Tijuana State Attorney's Office.

All four were covered with blankets inside a 1995 burgundy van with California license plates in a residential community known as Fraccionamiento Valle Dorado in eastern Tijuana.

Tijuana authorities have identified the victims as Brianna Hernandez Aguilera, 19; Carmen Jimenez Ramos Chavez, 20; Oscar Jorge Garcia Cota, 23; and Luis Antonio Games, Jr., 21.

Authorities were trying to determine if any of the victims had ties to Mexico's drug trade, after a toxicology report showed cocaine on the body of Brianna Hernandez.

The young people's bodies were found bound and tortured, which are common tactics used by Mexican drug gangs.

The Mexican government will probably blame two ladies from Thunder Bay for these murders. Why not, it worked the first time.

This place is dump.

When I went there I was so looking forward to swimming in the Pacific
Another guest at the resort set me straight before I got near the ocean

700,000 people living in a horseshoe around the bay & no sewage treatment.
Its all straight pipes into the bay! Yikes
The sand walking along the beach was coarse & sharp and no way you could walk bear foot. Every once and a while you could a hunk of shit rolling around in the surf. Disgusting
The streets were filthy & everywhere there were a ton of beggars

First night there in a bar some some guy says to me, "Hey Mister you want my Sister" & produces his hooker sibling for display.
I almost pissed my self that was sooo funny, but I just said no thanks

The nightlife was pretty wild, but you had to be extremely careful
One of the locals became very aggressive with one of the ladies (from the resort) we were out with

I made the best of it and had a reasonably good time by staying at the resort which had a swim up bar in the pool, met some decent people there, but I would not recommend this as a vacation destination

Is it any wonder that many of us gringos are angry at importing 12 to 20 million people raised with that mindset? Then feed, clothe, house, educate and provide free health care to all and their progeny?

Mexico is a 3rd world country, with an absolutely corrupt elite class.

I never understood going to 3rd world countries for vacations either. Yes i know its all about the nice beaches and understand going once to a place, but dont get why keep going back to the same place. But I'm not exactly a beach/tanning dude so for me that just not that exciting. I'm a complete tourist, more about seeing the landmarks around the world/countries etc.

Friend told me a story that happened a few months back.
Group of girls from Cal. went over to Mexico to celebrate ones birthday. One girl went to the washroom and never came out. There was a backdoor (why?) to the washroom and she was kidnapped.
Her friends (sister included) went to the border/customs to see if maybe she would appear. She ends up showing up in a car and her sister noticed her right away. Kidnappers killed her, cut her open and filled her with drugs. Forgot if it was coke or heroin.

Those are scary headlines! I can never understand why people from a first world country would ever voluntarily travel to a third world country. The locals must resent a rich Westerner using his/her money to exploit their women or other resources.

Poor young naive Amanda Lindhout kidnapped in Somalia.

Thanks for letting us know about Amanda...a tragedy that has never received coverage from the proper media channels..

Mexico seems like a cesspool..the country has a chapter written about it in Robert Young Pelton's "The World's most Dangerous Places", an excellent read.

For travel and hobbying purposes, one can do better, especially if seeking latin women in an environment where you won't be robbed and beaten...even the Mexican SPs I've been with have told me I'd be a sitting duck in that country!

It appears that the media has been asked to keep this kidnapping low profile because of sensitive ongoing negotiation with the kidnappers. Similar to the situation with Melissa Fong (check name) of the CBC when she was kidnapped in Afghanistan.

Amanda was naive to the nth degree. While in Iraq, she, apparently, wrote some articles praising Iran and critical of the West. Now that she has been kidnapped, she turns to the West (not Iran) pleading for help.
