not a midsize

The XTrail is Nissan's small SUV. Nissan's midsize SUV is the Pathfinder. The Armada is their fullsize boat.
Unless you go offroading, you'll like the smaller car based SUVs as they ride better than the midsized ones (which traditionally were truck based but now aren't necessarily) and use less fuel.
I've owned both a Honda CRV - which I found acceptable but not inspired. I own a Toyota 4Runner which is great on highways and byways but sucks in the city. It all depends on what you want to use it for.
For the car nerds, the interesting thing about the XTrail is that it doesn't follow Nissan's winning formula which is to standardize on two powerplants (2.5l, 3.5l) and coat them in aggressive styled bodywork. I suspect they got tired of watching Toyota and Honda with their Ravs and CRVs and built something on the old Sentra platform.
